A Wife's Vocation and Conduct
The wife prays for grace to fulfill her calling in marriage, household management, and godly character.
Gracious God, faithful Father! Because you have graciously called me into holy marriage to keep a household—where I can also serve and please you, my God—give me, your servant, grace always to keep your divine fear before my eyes, to love you, my Creator and Redeemer, above all things, and to trust you; and next after you, to fear, honor, and love my husband, and not to let myself desire anyone else. Help me so that, according to your commandment, my will may be subject to my husband, ready to obey him willingly, and that the hidden person of my heart may be steadfastly adorned with a gentle, quiet spirit and every kind of virtue—just as the holy women of old were, who set their hope on God and were obedient to their husbands. Give me, your maidservant, a chaste and modest way of life in fear and humility, so that in all godliness, with kind and seemly words, I may turn aside and soothe my husband's anger and displeasure and meet him with mildness; and so that I may also raise my children and household servants with gentleness for the praise and honor of your holy name, and that they may follow me with a willing heart in everything good.12 Help me also to be a faithful helper to my husband, to carefully keep together the provision you graciously give us and neglect nothing, but to help work and do what belongs to my calling—so that I may have something to give the needy and can open my hand to the poor.3 Guard us from unfaithful workers and bad servants who diminish and waste our livelihood. Grant me also the grace to bear the cross of marriage patiently, and not to grow so quickly timid or discouraged when suffering arises—for through trial and adversity our faith is proved.4

The prayer concludes by entrusting the entire household to God's protection.
O Lord God! Into your almighty power I commit myself, my dear husband, and all my children and household servants; keep us from sin, shame, and every affliction, through Jesus Christ our Lord.✦ Amen.

Gütiger Gott, getreuer Vater! Weil du mich aus Gnaden in den heiligen Ehestand zur Haushaltung berufen hast, darinnen ich dir auch, meinem Gott, dienen und gefallen kann, so gib mir, deiner Dienerin, Gnade, dass ich deine göttliche Furcht stets vor meinen Augen habe und dich, meinen Schöpfer und Erlöser, über alle Dinge liebe, und dir vertraue; nach dir aber meinen Mann fürchte, ehre und liebe, und mich keines andern gelüsten lasse. Hilf, dass nach deinem Gebot mein Wille meinem Mann unterworfen sei, demselben zu gehorchen in aller Willigkeit, und dass der verborgene Mensch meines Herzens unverrückt mit sanftem, stillem Geiste und mit allerlei Tugenden geschmückt sei, wie vor Zeiten die heiligen Weiber gewesen, die ihre Hoffnung auf Gott setzten und ihren Männern gehorsam waren. Gib mir, deiner Magd, einen keuschen, züchtigen Wandel in der Furcht und Demut, dass ich in aller Gottseligkeit mit freundlichen und sittigen Worten den Zorn und Unmut meines Hauswirtes ablehnen und versöhnen, und ihm mit Glimpf begegnen könne, dazu meine Kinder und Gesinde mit Sanftmut zu Lob und Ehre deines heiligen Namens aufziehe, und dass sie mir folgen mit willigem Herzen zu allem Guten. Hilf auch, dass ich meinem Manne eine treue Gehilfin sei, und die Nahrung, so du uns aus Gnaden bescherest, fleißig zusammenhalte, und nichts verwahrlose, sondern arbeiten und schaffen helfe, was mir zuständig ist in meinem Beruf, auf dass ich habe zu geben den Dürftigen, und meine Hand ausbreiten könne zu den Armen. Behüte uns vor untreuen Arbeitern und bösem Gesinde, die unsere Nahrung schmälern und vergeuden. Verleihe mir auch Gnade, dass ich das Kreuz im Ehestand geduldig trage und nicht sobald schüchtern oder abgeschreckt werde, wo sich ein Leiden erhöbe, indem durch Anfechtung und Widerwärtigkeit unser Glaube bewähret wird. O Herr Gott!
In deine allmächtige Gewalt befehle ich dir mich, meinen lieben Ehemann, alle meine Kinder und Gesinde, du wollest uns behüten vor Sünden, Schanden und allem Leid, durch Jesum Christum, unsern Herrn. Amen.
