A Prayer for the Unbelieving and the Lost
A comprehensive intercession for the conversion of unbelievers, the restoration of the fallen, and the enlightenment of those blinded by error.
I ask you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, our Lord, that you would graciously have mercy on all unbelievers, whoever and wherever they are, who still walk in darkness, who do not have the light of your Gospel—those the devil has struck with blindness and whose foolish hearts he has darkened, who are estranged from the life that comes from God through the ignorance that is in them, and who go to mute idols as they are led, and who out of blindness curse and blaspheme your dear Son, Jesus Christ, the throne of grace. Therefore, faithful God, take away the veil that still hangs unlifted before the hearts of the Jews, who stumble over the stone of stumbling and the rock of offense.1 Enlighten their eyes so that they may recognize the true Messiah, the Savior of the world. Bring the Gentiles and all unbelievers who regard your Word as foolishness into the true sheepfold and assembly of Christians, into the Communion of saints, so that with us and all believers they may honor, praise, and worship you—the Father in the Son and the Son with the Father and the Holy Spirit—one true God and Lord. Open the understanding of all people who do not set their salvation and trust solely and only on the true foundation and cornerstone, Christ Jesus, so that they may recognize the one you have sent, receive him with right faith and true confidence of heart as their Savior and Redeemer, who by his obedience and fulfillment of the law, through his bitter death, has won an eternal redemption. Also, bring back all who have fallen away from the Christian faith, or are otherwise in error on some points and infected with false teaching, to the eternal truth of your Word. God of all grace, have mercy on those who are not of the true faith, who sit in the shadow of death and walk by the darkness of their minds on an uneven path.2 Seek what is lost, bring back what has gone astray, enlighten the blinded, open the ears of the deaf, open the mouths of the mute who do not confess you, raise up the fallen, recover those who have turned away, gather the scattered, and set right those who err and have been led astray, for the sake of your mercy.

Ich bitte dich, mein himmlischer Vater, durch Jesum Christum, deinen lieben Sohn, unsern Herrn, du wollest dich gnädiglich erbarmen über alle Ungläubigen, wer und wo sie seien, so noch in Finsternis wandeln, welche das Licht deines Evangelii nicht haben, die der Teufel mit Blindheit geschlagen und ihr unverständiges Herz verfinstert hat, die entfremdet sind von dem Leben, das aus Gott ist, durch die Unwissenheit, so in ihnen ist, und zu den stummen Götzen gehen, wie sie geführt werden, und deinen lieben Sohn, Jesum Christum, den Gnadenthron, aus Blindheit verfluchen und lästern. Derwegen, du getreuer Gott, nimm hinweg die Decke, welche da hänget unaufgedeckt vor den Herzen der Juden, die sich stoßen an dem Stein des Anlaufens und an dem Fels der Ärgernis. Erleuchte ihre Augen, auf dass sie erkennen den wahren Messiam, der Welt Heiland. Bringe die Heiden und alle Ungläubigen, so dein Wort für eine Torheit achten, in den rechten Schafstall und Versammlung der Christen, in die Gemeinschaft der Heiligen, auf dass sie mit uns und allen Gläubigen dich, den Vater im Sohn und den Sohn mit dem Vater und Heiligen Geist, einen wahren Gott und Herrn ehren, preisen und anbeten. Eröffne das Verständnis allen Menschen, so ihre Seligkeit und Vertrauen nicht einig und allein auf den rechten Grund- und Eckstein, Christum Jesum, setzen, dass sie denselben, welchen du gesandt hast, erkennen, mit rechtem Glauben und wahrer Zuversicht des Herzens für ihren Heiland und Erlöser annehmen, der mit seinem Gehorsam und Erfüllung des Gesetzes durch seinen bittern Tod eine ewige Erlösung erworben hat. Wollest auch alle, so vom christlichen Glauben abgewichen oder sonst in etlichen Stücken irrig und mit falscher Lehre behaftet sind, wiederbringen zu der ewigen Wahrheit deines Worts. Gott aller Gnaden, erbarme dich über die, welche des rechten Glaubens nicht sind, so da sitzen im Schatten des Todes und wandeln nach der Dunkelheit ihres Sinnes auf unebner Bahn. Suche das Verlorne, bringe wieder das Verirrte, erleuchte die Verblendeten, eröffne die Ohren der Tauben, tue auf den Mund der Stummen, die dich nicht bekennen, richte auf die Gefallenen, hole wieder die Abgewichenen, versammle die Zerstreuten, bringe zurecht die Irrigen und Verführten um deiner Barmherzigkeit willen.
