The Descent of the Son of God

The Creed confesses that the Son of God descended from heaven for the salvation of humanity.

Of whom does the Creed say, "He came down from heaven"? The Creed says "He came down from heaven" about the Son of God. How could God come down from heaven if He is omnipresent? Being omnipresent, God always remains in heaven and always on earth; but on earth He was first invisible, and then He appeared in the flesh—and that is why it is said that He came down from heaven. Holy Scripture speaks of this in the words of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself: “No one has ascended into heaven except the Son of Man who came down from heaven, who is in heaven” (John 3:13). Why did the Son of God come down from heaven? The Son of God came down from heaven for us human beings and for our salvation, as is said in the Creed.1

The Fall and the Need for Salvation

Humanity fell into sin, death, and the curse through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, necessitating a Savior.

Who did the Son of God come to save? It is said that the Son of God came down from heaven for us, meaning that He came to earth not for one particular nation or for some people only, but for the salvation of us all—of humanity in general.2 What did the Son of God come to save people from? The Son of God came to earth to save people from sin, the curse, and death. What is sin? Sin is the transgression of the law. “Sin is lawlessness” (1 John 3:4). Where did sin enter people from? Sin entered humanity through the devil, even though people were created in the image of the One who is without sin. "Whoever commits sin is of the devil, because the devil sinned first" (1 Jn. 3:8). When did sin enter humanity? Sin passed from the devil to humanity when he deceived Eve and Adam, leading them to break God's commandment. Which commandment did Adam break? God commanded Adam in paradise not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and at the same time told him that as soon as he tasted it, he would surely die.3 Why was breaking the commandment deadly for man? Eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil became deadly for man because it was joined with disobedience to the will of God. Disobedience separated man from God and His grace, and alienated him from life in God. Why was the tree in paradise called "the tree of the knowledge of good and evil"? The name "tree of the knowledge of good and evil" fits what it is, because through this tree man learned by experience what good lies in obedience to God's will, and what evil lies in opposing it.4 Why was it possible to disobey God's will? Adam and Eve obeyed the devil contrary to God's will. When God created man, He gave him, by His grace, a will naturally inclined to love God, yet still free; man then used that freedom for evil. How did the devil deceive Adam and Eve? Eve spoke with the serpent in paradise, and the serpent persuaded her that if people ate fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they would know good and evil and would be like gods. Deceived by this promise and the beauty of the fruit, Eve ate it; Adam followed her example and ate it as well. What was the result of Adam's sin? Adam's sin brought about the curse and death. What is the curse? The curse is the condemnation of sin by God's righteous judgment, and also the condemnation of the evil on earth that has come upon people as punishment for their sin. God said to Adam, "Cursed is the ground because of you" (Gen. 3:17). What kind of death resulted from Adam's sin? Adam's sin brought about a twofold death: bodily, when the body is deprived of the soul that gave it life, and spiritual, when the soul is deprived of the grace of God that gave it higher spiritual life. How does the soul die? The soul can die, but not in the way the body does. When the body dies, it becomes senseless and decays; but when the soul dies through sin, it loses spiritual light, joy, and blessedness—yet it isn't destroyed or annihilated. It remains in a state of darkness, sorrow, and suffering. Why do people die? It isn't just the first human beings who died; everyone dies because they descend from Adam, who was infected with sin, and because they sin themselves. Just as a contaminated stream flows from a contaminated spring, so from a forefather who is infected with sin—and is therefore mortal—comes offspring that is also infected with sin and is therefore mortal. Holy Scripture describes it this way: "Just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, so also death has passed to all people, because all sinned in him" (Rom. 5:12). Were the fruits of the tree of life of any use to man? After the sin, the fruits of the tree of life were of no use to man. After the sin, he couldn't eat them because he had been driven out of paradise.

The Promise of the Savior

God provided hope to fallen humanity through the promise of a coming Savior, repeated throughout the Old Testament.

Did people still have hope of salvation? When the first people confessed their sin before God, He, in His mercy, gave them hope of salvation. What did this hope consist of? The hope of salvation consisted in this: that God promised that the seed of the woman “will strike … (the devil) on the head” (Gen.5 3:15). What does this promise mean? This promise means that the Lord Jesus Christ will defeat the devil, who deceived people, and will deliver them from sin, the curse, and death. Why is the Lord Jesus Christ called "the seed of the woman"? The Lord Jesus Christ is called the seed of the woman because He was born on earth of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, without a man's seed. What benefit did this promise hold for people? From the time of this promise, people could believe savingly in the coming Savior, just as we believe in Him who has come.6 Did everyone in ancient times believe in the coming Savior? Only a few people in ancient times believed in the coming Savior, while most people forgot God's promise about the Savior. Did God repeat His promise to people? God repeated His promise many times. For example, He gave Abraham the promise regarding the Savior in these words: "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed" (Gen. 22:18). He repeated that same promise to the prophet David: "I will raise up your seed after you… and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever" (2 Sam.7 7:12–13).

The Incarnation and the Person of Christ

The Son of God became man through the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, uniting two natures in one Person.

What do we mean by the word “incarnation”? By the word incarnation, we mean that the Son of God took on human flesh—apart from sin—and became man without ever ceasing to be God.8 The word “incarnation” comes from the words of the evangelist John: “The Word became flesh” (Jn. 1:14). Why is it also said of the Son of God that He "became man"? In the Creed, after it says the Son of God became incarnate, it also adds that He became man.9 This was done so that no one would think the Son of God took on only a body, but so that people would acknowledge in Him a perfect human being, consisting of body and soul. Holy Scripture provides testimony about this. The Apostle Paul writes: “There is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Tim.10 2:5).11 How many natures are there in the Lord Jesus Christ? In the Lord Jesus Christ, there is not one nature (i. e. nature).12 In Him, there are two natures, undivided and unconfused—the divine and the human—and, corresponding to these natures, two wills.13 How many persons are there in the Lord Jesus Christ? In the Lord Jesus Christ there aren't two persons, but one: God and man together—in a word, the God-man.14 What does Holy Scripture say about the incarnation of the Son of God from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary? In Holy Scripture, the evangelist Luke describes the incarnation of the Son of God from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. When the Virgin Mary asked the angel who had foretold the conception of Jesus to her, “How will this be, since I do not know a man?”15 the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God” (Lk.16 1:34–35). Who was the Virgin Mary? The Most Holy Virgin Mary came from the lineage of Abraham and David, from whose line the Savior was to come according to God's promise. She was betrothed to Joseph, who was of the same lineage, so that he could serve as her guardian,17 because18 she had been dedicated to God with a vow to remain always a virgin. Why do we call her Ever-Virgin? The Most Holy Mary truly remained and remains a Virgin—before, during, and after the birth of the Savior—and that is why she is called Ever-Virgin. Why do we call the Virgin Mary the Mother of God? The Orthodox Church has honored the Most Holy Virgin Mary with yet another great title—Mother of God.19 This title comes from Holy Scripture, specifically from these words of the prophet Isaiah: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel” (Is. 7:14) (Emmanuel, translated from the Hebrew, means God with us). Righteous Elizabeth also calls the Most Holy Virgin the Mother of the Lord. And this title is equivalent to the title Theotokos (Mother of God).20 “And how is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Lk. 1:43). The Most Holy Virgin is called the Mother of God, even though the Lord Jesus Christ wasn't born of her according to His divinity, which is eternal, but according to His humanity. She is rightly called the Mother of God because He who was born of Her was, in the very conception and birth from Her, as He is and always is, true God. What is the dignity of the Virgin Mary? As the Mother of the Lord, the Most Holy Virgin Mary surpasses every created being in grace and nearness to God, and therefore in dignity as well; for this reason, the Orthodox Church honors her above the Cherubim and Seraphim. Regarding the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ from the Most Holy Theotokos, it should also be noted that because this birth was holy and free from sin, it was also without pain; for among the punishments for sin, God appointed for Eve, "in pain." . . "to bring forth children" (see St. John of Damascus, Theology, bk.21 4, ch. 14, § 6).

The Signs and Works of the Savior

The Savior was recognized through prophetic fulfillment, divine revelation, and His miraculous works.

How could people recognize the Savior who had been born? By God's providence, signs were given so that people could recognize the Savior born for them. These include many precise prophecies regarding the various circumstances of His birth and earthly life. For instance, the prophet Isaiah foretold that the Savior would be born of a Virgin (Isa. 7:14). The prophet Micah foretold that the Savior would be born in Bethlehem, and the Jews understood this prophecy in just that way before they learned of the event itself (Matt. 2:4–6). After the second temple was built in Jerusalem, the prophet Malachi foretold that the Savior's coming was near, that He would enter this temple, and that a Forerunner like the prophet Elijah would be sent before Him—which clearly points to John the Baptist (Mal. 3:4–5). The prophet Zechariah foretold the Savior's triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Zech. 9:9). The prophet Isaiah foretold the Savior's sufferings with remarkable clarity (Is. ch. 53). The prophet David, in Psalm 21, depicted the Savior's sufferings on the cross with such accuracy that it is as if they had been written about at the very foot of the cross.22 The prophet Daniel foretold the Savior's appearance 490 years in advance, along with His death on the cross, the subsequent destruction of the temple and Jerusalem, and the end of Old Testament sacrifices (Dan. ch. 9). Did people learn about the Savior who had been born? Many people came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior during His birth and life on earth, and they did so in various ways. The wise men from the East recognized Him by the star that appeared in the east before His birth. The shepherds of Bethlehem learned of Him from the angels, who announced to them that a Savior had been born in the city of David. The holy and righteous Simeon and Anna recognized Him through a special revelation from the Holy Spirit when He was brought into the temple forty days after His birth. John the Baptist recognized Him at the Jordan River during His baptism through revelation, the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Him in the form of a dove, and the voice from heaven from God the Father: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Matt. 3:17). A similar voice spoke concerning Him to Peter, James, and John during His Transfiguration on Mount Tabor: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to Him" (Matt. 17:5). Besides that, a great many recognized the Savior by the extraordinary height of His teaching, and especially by the miracles He performed. What miracles did Jesus Christ perform? The Lord Jesus Christ performed many miracles. He healed those who were incurably ill and those possessed by demons in an instant—with a single word, the touch of His hand, or even by them touching His clothing. Once with five loaves, and another time with seven, He fed several thousand people in a deserted place. He walked on water and calmed the storm with a word. He raised the dead: He raised the son of the widow of Nain, the daughter of Jairus, and righteous Lazarus on the fourth day after his death.

Salvation Through Teaching and Life

Christ accomplishes our salvation through His teaching and life, which we must receive and imitate to be born again.

How did Jesus Christ accomplish our salvation? The Son of God accomplished our salvation through His teaching, His life, His death, and His resurrection. What did the Savior teach? Christ's teaching was the Gospel of the kingdom of God, or, in other words, the teaching about salvation and eternal blessedness—the very teaching that the Orthodox Church still teaches today (see Mark 1:14–15). Under what condition does Christ's teaching bring us salvation? Christ's teaching brings us salvation if we receive it with our whole heart and live according to it. Once the first human beings accepted the devil's false word, it became the seed of sin and death within them. In contrast, when Christians diligently receive Christ's true word, it becomes the seed of a holy and immortal life within them. As the apostle Peter says, Christians are "born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the word of God, which is living and abides forever" (1 Pet. 1:23). Under what condition is the life of Jesus Christ saving for us? The life of Jesus Christ brings us salvation when we imitate it, for He says: “Whoever serves Me must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also” (Jn. 12:26).

Notes

  1. 1«нас ради человек и нашего ради спасения» follows the Creed’s fixed formula (cf. Nicene «for us men and for our salvation»); «men» here means humankind, not males only.
  2. 2«нас ради человек» echoes the Creed's Church Slavonic formula (for us men); rendered as «for us human beings» to keep the universal, non-ethnic sense while avoiding archaic diction.
  3. 3Russian «смертью умрет» is the intensifying biblical idiom (cf. Gen 2:17); rendered as «would surely die» rather than the more wooden «die the death».
  4. 4«соответствует самому себе» rendered as "fits what it is" (the name is apt/self-consistent), not as empty tautology.
  5. 5Russian «семя жены» rendered as “the seed of the woman,” the traditional catechetical wording of Gen 3:15. Source parenthetical «(диавола)» kept as an editorial gloss identifying the serpent with the devil; ellipsis is in the source.
  6. 6Russian спасительно means belief that is salvific / unto salvation, not merely useful or beneficial; rendered as 'savingly' to keep that force.
(2 Kingdoms) corresponds to 2 Samuel in standard English Protestant/Catholic numbering.
  8. 8Normalized reading treats the glued form «воплощениеподразумевается» as «воплощение подразумевается» (missing space).
  9. 9Russian distinguishes воплотился (became incarnate / was made flesh) from вочеловечился (became man). The pair is kept to preserve the catechism's technical contrast developed in s3.
  10. 10Citation of 1 Timothy 2:5 is split across s2 and s3 in the source payload; s2 ends mid-parenthesis at the book abbreviation.
  11. 11Continuation and close of the 1 Timothy citation begun in s2.
  12. 12природа here glosses естество: the ordinary Russian word for nature clarifying the technical term.
  13. 13нераздельно и неслиянно echoes Chalcedonian language (indivisibly / without confusion). Rendered as undivided and unconfused for catechetical clarity.
  14. 14Russian «лицо» is the catechetical term for Person (hypostasis), not 'face' or psychological personality; capitalized Person to mark the dogmatic sense. «Богочеловек» is rendered as the traditional compound God-man.
  15. 15Russian «мужа не знаю» is the traditional biblical idiom for virginity (Luke 1:34); rendered literally rather than paraphrased as “since I am a virgin,” to keep the scriptural wording close.
  16. 16Source splits the Luke citation across s4–s5; translation preserves the incomplete trailing “(Lk.” so the section’s sentence refs stay intact.
  17. 17Source sentence is cut mid-abbreviation after «т.»; with s4 «к.» this is Russian «т. к.» (так как, “because”). The causal link is completed in s4–s5.
  18. 18Fragment «к.» completes the split abbreviation «т. к.» = так как (“because/since”), introducing the reason in s5.
  19. 19Russian Богородица is the standard Orthodox title (Greek Theotokos). Rendered here as Mother of God for modern readability; Theotokos remains an acceptable alternate rendering.
  20. 20Богородица rendered as Theotokos with plain-English gloss Mother of God, matching Orthodox catechetical usage and the neighboring sections’ title.
  21. 21Russian Богословие here names John of Damascus's dogmatic work (commonly On the Orthodox Faith / Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith in English).
  22. 22Psalm 21 follows Septuagint/Orthodox numbering (Hebrew/Protestant Psalm 22).
