The Nature and Number of the Sacraments
The catechism defines the nature of the seven Sacraments and explains the unique spiritual grace imparted by each.
Why is Baptism mentioned in the Creed? Baptism is mentioned in the Creed because faith is sealed (confirmed) by Baptism and the other Sacraments.1 What is a Sacrament? A Sacrament is a sacred action through which grace, or the saving power of God, acts on a person in a mysterious way. How many Sacraments are there in total? There are seven Sacraments: Baptism, Chrismation, Communion, Penance, Priesthood, Marriage, and Unction with oil.2 What spiritual power does each of these Sacraments have? Each of these Sacraments has its own spiritual power: in Baptism a person is mysteriously born into the spiritual life; in Chrismation one receives grace that assists and strengthens spiritual growth; in Communion one is nourished spiritually; in Penance one is healed of spiritual diseases, i.34 e.5 from sins; in Holy Orders one receives grace to regenerate and form others spiritually through teaching and the Sacraments; in Marriage one receives grace that sanctifies marriage and the natural birth and upbringing of children; in Holy Unction one is healed of bodily diseases through healing from spiritual ones.67
Why Baptism is Singled Out in the Creed
The Creed specifically mentions Baptism to resolve historical disputes regarding the necessity of a single, unrepeatable baptism.
Why aren't all these Sacraments mentioned in the Creed? The Creed does not mention all the Sacraments, but only Baptism, because there was doubt about it: whether some people—heretics, for example—should be baptized a second time; that question needed to be settled, and it was settled in the Creed, which affirmed one (a single) Baptism.✦8

Каждое из этих Таинств имеет свою духовную силу: в Крещениичеловек таинственно рождается в жизнь духовную; в Миропомазании получает благодать, содействующую духовному росту и укрепляющую; в Причащении питается духовно; в Покаянии исцеляется от духовных болезней, т. е. от грехов; в Священстве получает благодать духовно возрождать и воспитывать других посредством учения и Таинств; в Браке получает благодать, освящающую супружество и естественное рождение и воспитание детей; в Елеосвящении врачуется от болезней телесных, посредством исцеления от духовных.
Почему в Символе веры не упомянуто обо всех этих Таинствах? В Символе веры упомянуто не обо всех Таинствах, а об одном Крещении потому, что в отношении него было сомнение: не следует ли некоторых людей, например, еретиков, крестить вторично; нужно было решить этот вопрос, что и сделано в Символе, который утвердил едино (одно) крещение.
