The Nature and Origin of Baptism
Baptism is defined as a sacramental rebirth through water and the Spirit, established by Christ's example and command.
What is Baptism? Baptism is a Sacrament in which the believer, by threefold immersion of the body in water with the invocation of God the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, dies to the fleshly, sinful life and is reborn by the Holy Spirit into a spiritual, holy life. "Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God" (John 3:5). Where does Baptism begin? Baptism began when, first, at the Jordan, the Forerunner of the Savior "John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the One who was coming after him, that is, in Christ Jesus" (Acts 19:4). Then Jesus Christ sanctified Baptism by His own example when He received it from John. Finally, after His resurrection, He gave the apostles a solemn command: "Go, teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matt. 28:19). What is the chief thing in the sacramental rite of Baptism? The chief thing in the sacramental rite of Baptism is threefold immersion in water with the words: "The servant of God (name) is baptized in the name of the Father.1 Amen. And of the Son. Amen. And of the Holy Spirit. Amen."
Preparation and Initiation
Baptism requires faith and repentance, and the Church provides for the initiation of infants through the faith of their sponsors.
What is required of someone who wants to be baptized? Anyone wanting to be baptized must have repentance and faith; that is why the Creed is read before Baptism. "Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved" (Mark 16:16). On what basis are infants baptized? Infants are baptized based on the faith of their parents and godparents, who are obligated to teach them the faith when they come of age.2 Is there evidence in Holy Scripture that infants should be baptized? It can be proven from Holy Scripture that infants should be baptized. In Old Testament times, circumcision was performed on eight-day-old infants, and in the New Testament Baptism is performed in place of circumcision; therefore, Baptism must be performed on infants. From what does it follow that Baptism has replaced Old Testament circumcision? The fact that Baptism is performed in place of circumcision follows from the apostle’s words to the faithful: “You… were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the sinful body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ… having been buried with Him in baptism” (Col 2:11–12).✦ Why are sponsors needed at Baptism?3 Sponsors are needed at Baptism so that they may vouch before the Church for the faith of the one being baptized and, after Baptism, take that person under their care for strengthening in the faith (see St. Dionysius the Areopagite, On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy, chapter 2).
Spiritual Warfare and Symbols
The rites of exorcism, the sign of the Cross, and the white garment signify the believer's liberation from darkness and entry into a life of purity.
Why is an exorcism read over someone being baptized? An exorcism is read over the person being baptized to drive away the devil—the one who, ever since Adam's sin, has gained access to people and a certain power over them, as if they were his captives and slaves. The Apostle Paul says that all people outside of grace live “according to the custom of this world, according to the will of the prince who rules in the air, the spirit who is now at work in the children of disobedience” (Eph. 2:2). What does the power of exorcism consist of? The power of exorcism lies in the name of Jesus Christ, invoked with prayer and faith. The Lord Jesus Christ promised believers: “In My name they will cast out demons” (Mk. 16:17). What power does the sign of the Cross have? The sign of the Cross has the same power as the name of Jesus Christ crucified when it is spoken with faith by the movement of the lips; and the sign of the Cross is the same thing when, with faith, it is made by the movement of the hand or in some other way. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem writes: Let us not be ashamed to confess the Crucified; let us boldly make the sign of the Cross with our hand on our forehead and on everything—on the bread we eat, on the cups from which we drink; let us make it when we come and go, when we lie down to sleep and when we rise, when we are on the road and when we rest. It is a great protection, given as a gift to the poor and to the weak without effort.4 It is the grace of God, a sign for the faithful and a terror to evil spirits (Catechetical Lecture 13:36).5 How long has the sign of the Cross been in use? The use of the sign of the Cross goes back to the time of the apostles (see: St. Dionysius the Areopagite, On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy, ch. 2 and 5; Tertullian, On the Crowns, chapter6 3; On the Resurrection, ch. 8.)7 . What is the meaning of the white garment worn after Baptism? The white garment worn after Baptism signifies the purity of the soul and of the Christian life. Why is the Cross placed on the person being baptized? The Cross is placed on the person being baptized as a constant reminder of Christ's commandment and a visible sign pointing to it: "If anyone wants to follow Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me" (Matt. 16:24). What does walking around the font with a lamp mean? When the baptized person walks around the font with a lamp, it signifies spiritual joy joined with spiritual enlightenment.
The Unrepeatable Gift
Baptism is a unique, unrepeatable spiritual birth, and while post-baptismal sin carries greater weight, it is healed through repentance.
Why does the Creed say that Baptism is one? The Creed commands us to acknowledge Baptism as one, that is,8 i.e., one. Baptism is performed once and is not repeated. Why isn't Baptism repeated? Baptism is not repeated because it is a spiritual birth: a person is born once, and so is baptized once. Do those who sin after Baptism bear the same guilt as those who have not been baptized? Those who sin after Baptism are more guilty in their sins than the unbaptized are in theirs, because they received from God a special help for doing good and rejected it. "If, after escaping the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome by them, the last state is worse for such people than the first" (2 Pet.✦ 2:20). Can sins committed after Baptism be forgiven? For those who have sinned after Baptism, there is a way to obtain forgiveness: repentance.
