The Divinity and Life-Giving Nature of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is confessed as true God and the life-giving source of spiritual life.
In what sense is the Holy Spirit called Lord? The Holy Spirit is called Lord in the same sense as the Son of God, that is,1 the Holy Spirit is true God. Holy Scripture bears witness to this in the words the apostle Peter spoke when he rebuked Ananias: “Why did you let Satan put into your heart the thought of lying to the Holy Spirit? .2 .3 You haven't lied to men, but to God” (Acts 5:3–4). Why is the Holy Spirit called life-giving? The Holy Spirit is called life-giving, and this is to be understood as follows: together with God the Father and the Son, He gives life to all created things, and especially spiritual life to human beings. "Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God" (John 3:5).✦
The Procession and Worship of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and is worthy of equal worship with the Father and the Son.
What do we know about the procession of the Holy Spirit? We know that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father because of these words from the Lord Jesus Christ Himself: "But when the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about Me" (John✦4 15:26). Is there any other teaching regarding the procession of the Holy Spirit? The teaching that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father cannot be changed or added to. First, because in this teaching the Orthodox Church repeats the exact words of Jesus Christ Himself; and His words are, without doubt, a sufficient and perfect expression of the truth. Second, because the Second Ecumenical Council, whose primary purpose was to establish the true teaching about the Holy Spirit, undoubtedly set this teaching forth satisfactorily in the Creed; the Orthodox Church recognized this so decisively that the Third Ecumenical Council, through its seventh canon, forbade the composition of any new Creed. Therefore, Saint John of Damascus writes: We confess the Holy Spirit as proceeding from the Father and call Him the Spirit of the Father; but we do not confess the procession of the Holy Spirit from the Son—we only call Him the Spirit of the Son (Theology, bk. 1, ch. 11, art.5 4). What level of worship is appropriate for the Holy Spirit? To the Holy Spirit belong worship and glorification equal with the Father and the Son.6 This is clear because Jesus Christ commanded baptism 'in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit' (Matt. 28:19).
The Holy Spirit in the Prophets and Apostles
The Holy Spirit is the divine author who spoke through the prophets and apostles to reveal truth.
Why is it said that the Holy Spirit "spoke through the prophets"?✦ The Creed states that the Holy Spirit spoke through the prophets.7 This is said to refute certain false teachers who claimed that the books of the Old Testament were not written by the Holy Spirit.✦ Holy Scripture testifies that the Holy Spirit truly spoke through the prophets. The Apostle Peter writes: "No prophecy was ever uttered by human will, but holy men of God spoke it as they were moved by the Holy Spirit" (2 Pet 1:21). Did the Holy Spirit speak through the apostles? The Holy Spirit spoke through the apostles. The Apostle Peter writes: “It was revealed to them (the prophets) that they were not serving themselves, but us, in what has now been proclaimed to you by those who preached the good news by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven” (1 Pet 1:12). Why aren't the apostles mentioned in the Creed? The apostles aren't mentioned in the Creed because, when it was written, no one doubted that they were divinely inspired.8
The Indwelling and Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit continues to dwell in Christians today, bestowing His gifts through prayer and the Sacraments.
How did the Holy Spirit reveal Himself to people? The Holy Spirit revealed Himself to people in a special way. He descended upon the apostles as tongues of fire on the fiftieth day after Christ's resurrection. Is the Holy Spirit still given in our time? Even now, the Holy Spirit is given to all true Christians. "Don't you know that you are God's temple, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?"✦ (1 Cor. 3:16). How can we become partakers of the Holy Spirit? We can become partakers of the Holy Spirit through earnest prayer and through the Sacraments. "If you, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him" (Lk. 11:13). "But when the grace and loving-kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior" (Tit.9 3:4–6). What are the primary gifts of the Holy Spirit? The prophet Isaiah identifies seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: the spirit of the fear of God, the spirit of knowledge, the spirit of strength, the spirit of counsel, the spirit of understanding, the spirit of wisdom, and the spirit of the Lord—which is the gift of piety and inspiration in the highest degree (see10 Isaiah 11:1–3).

Может ли быть иное учение об исхождении Святого Духа? Учение об исхождении Святого Духа от Отца не может быть подвержено какому-либо изменению или дополнению. Во-первых, потому, что Православная Церковь в этом учении повторяет точные слова Самого Иисуса Христа; а Его слова, без сомнения, являются достаточным и совершенным выражением истины. Во-вторых, потому, что второй Вселенский Собор, главным предметом которого было утверждение истинного учения о Святом Духе, без сомнения, удовлетворительно изложил это учение в Символе веры; и Православная Церковь признавала это столь решительно, что третий Вселенский Собор своим седьмым правилом запретил составлять новый Символ веры. Поэтому святой Иоанн Дамаскин пишет: Святой Дух исповедуем исходящим от Отца и именуем Его Духом Отца; от Сына же не исповедуем исхождение Святого Духа, но только именуем Его Духом Сыновним (Богословие, кн. 1, гл. 11, ст. 4).
Какая степень поклонения приличествует Святому Духу? Святому Духу приличествуют поклонение и прославление равноесо Отцом и Сыном. Это видно из того, что Иисус Христос повелел крестить «во имя Отца и Сына и Святаго Духа»(Мф. 28:19).
Почему сказано, что Святой Дух «глаголал через пророков»? В Символе веры сказано, что Святой Дух глаголал (говорил) через пророков. Это сказано для обличения некоторых лжеучителей, которые утверждали, что книги Ветхого Завета написаны не Святым Духом.
Священное Писание свидетельствует о том, что через пророков действительно говорил Святой Дух. Апостол Петр пишет: «Никогда пророчество не было произносимо по воле человеческой, но изрекали его святые Божии человеки, будучи движимы Духом Святым» (2Пет 1:21).

Как мы можем сделаться причастными Святому Духу? Сделаться причастным Святому Духу можно через усердную молитву и через Таинства. «Если вы, будучи злы, умеете даяния благие давать детям вашим, тем более Отец Небесный даст Духа Святаго просящим у Него» (Лк. 11:13). «Когда же явилась благодать и человеколюбие Спасителя нашего, Бога, Он спас нас не по делам праведности, которые бы мы сотворили, а по Своей милости, банею возрождения и обновления Святым Духом, Которого излил на нас обильно чрез Иисуса Христа, Спасителя нашего» (Тит. 3:4–6).
Какие главнейшие дары Святого Духа? Пророк Исаия указывает семь даров Духа Святаго: дух страха Божия, дух познания, дух силы, дух совета, дух понимания, дух мудрости, дух Господень, или дар благочестия и вдохновения в высшей степени (см. Ис. 11:1–3).
