We rise early and cry out to You: Lord, save us; for You are our God, and we know no other besides You.
Guidance and Illumination
A petition for the guardian angel to intercede against evil and enlighten the soul.
Since you have boldness before God, my holy guardian, entreat Him to deliver me from the evils that assail me.1 O bright Light, brightly enlighten my soul, my guide and guardian, O Angel given to me by God.
Vigilance and Theotokion
A prayer for spiritual wakefulness followed by an appeal to the Mother of God for victory over the enemy.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Even though I sleep under the heavy burden of sin, keep me as one who is awake, Angel of God, and raise me up to praise through your prayer.2 Now and always, and forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Lady and Mother of God, unwedded, hope of the faithful: cast down the enemy's proud exaltations, and gladden those who sing to you.34

У́тренююще вопие́м Ти́: Го́споди, спаси́ ны́; Ты́ бо еси́ Бо́г на́ш, ра́зве Тебе́ ино́го не ве́мы.
Я́ко име́я дерзнове́ние к Бо́гу, храни́телю мо́й святы́й, Сего́ умоли́ от оскорбля́ющих мя́ зо́л изба́вити.
Све́те све́тлый, све́тло просвети́ ду́шу мою́, наста́вниче мо́й и храни́телю, от Бо́га да́нный ми́ А́нгеле.

- 1 ↩дерзнове́ние is the liturgical equivalent of parrhesia: confident boldness of access before God, not mere daring or presumption.
- 2 ↩я́ко бдя́ща could be rendered 'as one who watches/stays awake' or 'as if I were awake'; both keep the contrast between sinful sleep and spiritual vigilance. моле́нием твои́м is the angel's intercessory prayer, not the speaker's.
- 3 ↩безневе́стная is the Marian title usually rendered 'Unwedded' (or 'Bride unwedded') in Orthodox hymnography; kept as 'unwedded' rather than paraphrased as merely 'virgin.'
- 4 ↩вра́жия возноше́ния = the enemy's exaltations/haughty uprisings; rendered 'proud exaltations' to keep both the adversarial force of вра́жий and the height/pride sense of возноше́ние.
