I. De les rails de Filosofia d'amor

The Roots of the Tree of Love

Ramon recalls the loving Art and names its eighteen beginnings as the roots of the Tree of Love, which are then divided into definitions, mixtures, and thoughts of love.

Ramon remembered the loving Art that he had made, and took the1 eighteen beginnings of that Art, and he called those the roots of this Tree of Love, which roots are: goodness, greatness, duration, power, wisdom, will, virtue, truth, glory, difference, concordance, contrariety, beginning, middle, end, majority, equality, and minority.2 Through these roots of love one can search out and find everything that belongs to good and great loving; and we divide these roots into three parts, that is to say: definitions, mixtures, and thoughts of love.3

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Old Catalan amativa: Llull's loving Art (Ars amativa), not a generic craft.
  2. 2 ↩Source lists veritat glòria without a separator; rendered as two Lullian principles.
  3. 3 ↩mesclamens keeps Llull's combinatorial-mixture sense; cogitacions rendered as thoughts rather than archaic cogitations.
