De la divisió del Arbre de Filosofia d'amor

The Division of the Tree

Ramon begins the Tree of the Philosophy of Love and divides it into seven parts, namely roots, trunk, branches, boughs, leaves, flowers, and fruits, following the pattern of his earlier Tree of Science.

To exalt good and great love, and to destroy bad and false love, Ramon began the Tree of the Philosophy.1 of Love, which he divided into2 seven. The parts are: roots, trunk, branches, boughs, leaves, flowers, and fruits; and Ramon considered this division according to the division of the Tree of Science that he had made.3

The Purpose of the Tree

Ramon explains that knowledge of the tree's division enables one to order their will toward charity and grace, and that the tree will speak in likenesses of the Beloved, Friend, and Love; this section concludes with the heading 'Introduction to the Philosophy of Love.'

Through this division of the Tree of Love, one can learn about the beginnings, the trunk, and the other parts of love. And through this knowledge of love, one can order and direct one's will to love and develop the habit of love by the grace of God, who gives the habit of charity, which is the form of love. This shapes the will to love the good and avoid evil, and God orders and moves the human will to love the great goods more strongly than the small ones, and to unlove the greater evils more strongly than the lesser ones.45 In this Tree, we intend to speak through likenesses: such as the Beloved, whom we call God; and the Friend, the human being who loves God; and Love, which is charity; and the gifts of love, which are the roots of this tree; and the operations of love—making good, magnifying, and the others; and the eagle of love, which is high love; and so on with the other comparisons.67 Introduction to the Philosophy of Love.8

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source ends mid-title as «l Arbre Fjsosofia i.»; read as «l'Arbre de Filosofia», with «d'Amor» continued in the next sentence.
  2. 2 ↩Leading garble «sgsai« D AMOR» read as «d'Amor», completing the work title begun in s1; «lo qual departí en» is clear.
  3. 3 ↩Normalized likely OCR forms: «rails»→arrels (roots), «fules»→fulles (leaves), «Jírhre de Sciencia»→Arbre de Sciència (Tree of Science).
  4. 4 ↩Normalized several clear scribal/OCR forms: voleníat→volentat (will); làbit/àbit→habit; gaanyar→guanyar (gain); dome→d'ome (of man); que Is→que ls/els (than the).
  5. 5 ↩àbit de caritat qui es forma damor: rendered as the scholastic habit of charity as the form of love; enformant kept as forming (giving form to) the will.
  6. 6 ↩Source form donseh damor is uncertain (likely OCR corruption). Rendered as operations of love from the clear appositive bonificar, magnificar, e los altres—the Art's verbal acts paired with the principles.
  7. 7 ↩amor, caritat: Love identified with charity as theological virtue; dones damor taken as gifts of love (= roots), not 'ladies of love'.
  8. 8 ↩Source intclUficcia iloofia amor is severely corrupt OCR. Most plausible intended sense: a title/heading fragment Introducció / filosofia d'amor.
