A Prayer for the Church

A foundational petition for the Church to remain steadfast in faith and grace.

Lord, we humbly ask you to keep your Church and household continually in your true faith, so that those who rely solely on the hope of your heavenly grace may always be defended by your mighty power. And may I serve you humbly and faithfully in this your Church, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Petition for Truth and Peace

A comprehensive plea for the reformation, healing, and strengthening of the Church.

Gracious Father, I humbly ask you to fill your holy Catholic Church with all truth and peace. Where it is corrupt, cleanse it; where it is in error, guide it; where it is superstitious, correct it; where anything is amiss, reform it; where it is right, strengthen and confirm it; where it is lacking, provide for it; where it is divided and torn apart, heal its breaches, O Holy One of Israel. Amen.

Faithfulness Amidst Division

A personal prayer for grace to remain united to God despite the external divisions of the Church.

O merciful God, since you’ve called me to live in these times when the divisions in your Church are severe, I humbly ask you to guide me so that the divisions among people don’t separate me from you or from it. May I always work for the preservation of truth and peace, and where our sins prevent that peace from succeeding, please accept my will as if it were the deed, so that I may continue to pray, even when you don’t grant it, knowing that you’ll grant it when you see it is fitting. In the meantime, I ask you to bless this Church in which I live, so that in it I may honor and serve you all the days of my life, and after this, be glorified by you through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Vine of the Lord

A lament and plea for God to restore His vineyard, which has been broken down and ravaged.

O Lord, you brought a vine out of Egypt and planted it; you made room for it, and once it took root, it filled the land. Why have you broken down its hedge, so that everyone passing by plucks its grapes? The wild boar from the woods roots it up, and the wild beasts of the field devour it. O turn again, God of Hosts, look down from heaven, behold and visit this vine, and the place of the vineyard that your right hand has planted, and the branch that you made so strong for yourself. Lord, hear me for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Builder and the Watchman

An acknowledgment that all human efforts to build or guard the Church are futile without God's blessing.

O Lord, unless you build the house, the builders labor in vain; unless you, O Lord, guard the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It’s pointless to rise early, take late rest, and eat the bread of toil if you don’t bless the efforts that seek the peace and welfare of your Church. Therefore, O Lord, build your Church and protect it, and take care of it, so that there may be no wasted effort among its builders. Amen.

A Plea for Mercy and Restoration

A humble confession of collective sin and a final appeal for God's mercy upon the Church and its people.

O Lord our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God; O You who keep covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble that has come upon us seem small before You, upon our priests, upon the houses built and dedicated to Your Name, upon the maintenance for those who serve at Your altar, upon our kings, state, and people since that day of affliction. You are just in all that has been brought upon us; for You have acted rightly, but we have acted wickedly. Yet, O Lord, have mercy, and turn to us again, for the sake of Jesus and His mercy. Amen.

Read the original Latin

O Lord, we humbly beseech thee to keep thy Church and Houshold continually in thy true Religion, that they which do lean only upon hope of thy heavenly grace, may evermore be defended by thy mighty power: And that I may humbly and faithfully serve thee in this thy Church, through Iesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gracious Father, I humbly beseech thee, for thy holy Catholick Church, fill it with all truth; in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purge it: where it is in error, direct it: where it is superstitious, rectifie it: where any thing is amiss, reform it: where it is right, strengthen and confirm it: where it is in want, furnish it: where it is divided and rent asunder, make up the breaches of it, O thou holy one of Israel. Amen.

O merciful God, since thou hast ordered me to live in these times, in which the rents of thy Church are grievous; I humbly beseech thee to guide me, that the divisions of men may not separate me either from thee or it, that I may ever labour the preservation of truth and peace, that where for and by our sins the peace of it succeeds not, thou wilt yet accept my will for the deed, that I may still pray, even while thou grantest not, because I know thou wilt grant it when thou seest it fit. In the mean time bless, I beseech thee, this Church in which I live, that in it I may honour and serve thee all the daies of my life, and after this be glorified by thee, through Iesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord thou hast brought a Vine out of Egypt and planted it; thou madest room for it, and when it had taken root it filled the land. O why hast thou broken down her hedge, that all which go by pluck off her grapes: the wild boar out of the wood rooteth it up, and the wild beasts of the field devour it. O turn thee again thou God of Hosts, look down from heaven, behold and visit this Vine, and the place of the Vineyard that thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest so strong for thy self. Lord, hear me for Iesus Christ his sake. Amen.

O Lord, except thou buildest the house, their labour is but lost that build it: and except thou, O Lord, keep the City, the Watchman waketh but in vain. It is but lost labour to rise early, and take late rest, and to eat the bread of carefulness, if thou bless not the endeavours that seek the peace and the welfare of thy Church. Therefore, O Lord, build thy Church and keep it, and take care for it, that there may be no lost labour amo…g the builders of it. Amen.

O Lord our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God; O thou which keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee that hath come upon us, upon our Priests, upon the Houses built and dedicated to thy Name, upon the Maintenance for them that serve at thy Altar, upon our Kings, State, and People since that day of affliction. Thou art just in all that is brought upon us: For thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly. Yet, O Lord, have mercy, and turn to us again, for Iesus and his mercy sake. Amen.
