VIII.
From the time he first took the overseas road, he never wore scarlet or green cloth, nor brown, nor various furs, but dressed in garments of black or camel's hair or coarse cloth. And because his clothes seemed to be of lesser value for giving to the poor than other more precious ones he used in his youth, he established that his almsgiver should have sixty pounds ready each year to give for God, beyond what he was accustomed to have. The pious king did not want anything to be lost to the poor because of his outward humility. Similarly, from then on, he never wanted to use spurs or reins unless they were entirely white and iron, without any gold plating, nor a saddle for riding unless it was white and without any decoration.
