II. Quod nomen Josiae ipsi competat

II. Quod nomen Josiae ipsi competat

For now, it suffices to say how the meaning of the name Josiah fits our king. Josiah indeed means 'The Lord's Salvation,' or 'The Lord's Elevation,' or 'The Lord's Incense' or 'Sacrifice.' To whom does the significance of this name more rightly belong than to our pious king, in whom the salvation of the Lord truly was? He who always strove for the salvation of himself and his neighbors, and worked for the elevation and exaltation of the Christian faith to the best of his ability; indeed, he who, besides the incense of mental devotion that he offered to the Lord internally since his youth, and besides the sacrifice of bodily penance that he presented daily to God, according to his state and the weakness of his own body, finally offered himself as a complete holocaust to the Lord in a double pilgrimage across the sea, as a sweet-smelling offering. If it was counted to Abraham as righteousness because he once chose to offer his only son at God's command, how much more will the Lord count this faithful servant for eternal righteousness and everlasting reward, who not just once but twice devoted himself to death, along with his brothers and the chosen flower of his entire kingdom, in service to the Savior? Moreover, in that same journey, two of his children, whom he loved dearly, died in the confession of true faith: namely, the Count of Nivernais and the Queen of Navarre. Thus, through King Josiah, he is rightly designated. But now let us proceed to describe his praiseworthy life and conduct with God's help.

Interim ad praesens dicere sufficiat, quomodo sensus nominis Josiae conveniat regi nostro. Josias quippe interpretatur Salus Domini, vel Elevatio Domini, vel Incensum Domini sive Sacrificium. Cui verius competit hujus nominis significatio, quàm pio regi nostro, in quo vere Domini salus fuit ?
