The Three Forms of the Confraternity

21. Strictly speaking, there's only one kind of Rosary confraternity, consisting of 150 Hail Marys; however, based on the fervor of those who practice it, there are three types: the common or ordinary Rosary, the perpetual Rosary, and the daily Rosary. The ordinary Rosary confraternity only requires that you recite it once a week. The perpetual Rosary requires it only once a year, while the daily Rosary asks that you say the full 150 Hail Marys every day.1
Freedom and Fidelity in Devotion
While the Rosary is a voluntary devotion that does not bind under sin, the author encourages faithfulness to avoid spiritual decline.
None of these Rosaries binds you under sin—not even venial sin—if you happen to miss them, because this commitment is entirely voluntary and a work of supererogation. However, you shouldn't enroll in the confraternity unless you have a firm resolve to recite it as required, as far as you can without neglecting the duties of your state of life.2 So, when saying the holy Rosary conflicts with a duty your state of life requires, you must prioritize that duty over the Rosary, however holy the Rosary may be. When you're sick and can't say it, either in full or in part, without making your illness worse, you aren't obligated to do so. When legitimate obedience, or involuntary forgetfulness, or pressing necessity has kept you from saying it, there is no sin, not even venial; you still share in the graces and merits of the other brothers and sisters of the holy Rosary who are saying it throughout the world. Christian, if you even fail to recite it through pure negligence, without any formal contempt, you don't sin either, strictly speaking, but you lose your share in the prayers and good works and merits of the confraternity, and through your unfaithfulness in small things and in works of supererogation you'll gradually fall into unfaithfulness in great things and in things of essential obligation; for: "Whoever despises little things will fall little by little" (Sir 19:1).3

21. Il n'y a à proprement parler qu'une sorte de confrérie du Rosaire composé de 150 Ave Maria; mais par rapport à la ferveur des différentes personnes qui le pratiquent, il y en a de trois sortes, savoir: le Rosaire commun ou ordinaire, le Rosaire perpétuel et le Rosaire quotidien. La confrérie du Rosaire ordinaire n'exige qu'on le récite qu'une fois par semaine. Celle du Rosaire perpétuel qu'une fois par an, mais celle du Rosaire quotidien demande qu'on le dise tous les jours tout entier, c'est-à-dire 150 Ave Maria. Aucun de ces Rosaires n'engage à péché, pas même véniel, si on vient à y manquer, parce que cet engagement est tout à fait volontaire et de surérogation; mais il ne faut pas s'enrôler dans la confrérie si on n'a pas la volonté déterminée à le réciter selon que la confrérie le demande autant qu'on le pourra sans manquer aux obligations de l'état. Ainsi lorsque la récitation du saint Rosaire se trouve en concurrence avec une action à laquelle l'état engage, on doit préférer cette action au Rosaire, quelque saint qu'il soit. Lorsque dans la maladie on ne peut le dire ni tout entier ni en partie, sans augmenter son mal, on n'y est pas obligé. Lorsque par une obéissance légitime, ou par un oubli involontaire, ou par une nécessité pressante, on n'a pu le dire il n'y a aucun péché, même véniel; on ne laisse pas de participer aux grâces et aux mérites des autres frères et sœurs du saint Rosaire qui le disent dans le monde.
Chrétien, si vous manquez même de le dire par pure négligence, sans aucun mépris formel, vous ne péchez pas aussi, absolument parlant, mais vous perdez la participation des prières et des bonnes œuvres et mérites de la confrérie, et par votre infidélité en choses petites et de surérogation, vous tomberez insensiblement dans l'infidélité aux choses grandes et d'obligation essentielle; car: Qui spernit modica paulatim decidet (Si 19,1).
