The Rosary as a Shield of Victory
Cardinal Pierre uses the power of the Rosary to lead a small Christian army to a miraculous victory against overwhelming odds.
108. Blessed Alain reports that a cardinal named Pierre, of the title of Saint Mary beyond the Tiber, was instructed by his close friend Saint Dominic in devotion to the holy Rosary; he became so attached to it that he championed the practice and urged it on everyone.1 The cardinal was sent as legate to the Holy Land among the Christians who had taken the cross against the Saracens. He convinced the Christian army of the power of the Rosary so thoroughly that, after they all took it up to beg for heaven's help in a battle where they numbered only three thousand, they triumphed over a hundred thousand.
The Terror of the Enemy
The Rosary and the Angelic Salutation possess the spiritual power to drive away demons and liberate souls from the tyranny of the devil.
As we have seen, the demons fear the Rosary beyond measure. Saint Bernard says that the Angelic Salutation drives them away and makes all hell tremble. Blessed Alain assures us that he has seen several people who had given themselves body and soul to the devil, renouncing their baptism and Jesus Christ, who were then delivered from his tyranny after taking up devotion to the holy Rosary.

Le bienheureux Alain rapporte qu'un cardinal nommé Pierre, du titre de Sainte-Marie delà le Tibre, instruit par saint Dominique, son ami intime, de la dévotion au saint Rosaire, s'y affectionna tellement qu'il en devint le panégyriste et le persuadait à tous. Le cardinal fut envoyé légat dans la Terre Sainte vers les chrétiens qui étaient croisés contre les Sarrasins. Il persuada si bien l'efficace du Rosaire à l'armée chrétienne que tous l'ayant embrassé pour implorer le secours du ciel dans un combat, où ils n'étaient que trois mille, ils triomphèrent de cent mille. Les démons, comme nous avons vu, craignent infiniment le Rosaire. Saint Bernard dit que la Salutation angélique leur donne la chasse et fait frémir tout l'enfer. Le bienheureux Alain assure qu'il a vu plusieurs personnes, qui s'étaient livrées au diable corps et âme, en renonçant au baptême et à Jésus-Christ, et puis, après avoir pris la dévotion du saint Rosaire, ont été délivrées de sa tyrannie.
