The Rich Treasures of the Confraternity
The author highlights the immense spiritual favors and indulgences granted by the Popes to the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary.
96. If privileges, graces, and indulgences make a confraternity commendable, we can say that the Rosary confraternity is the most commendable in the Church, since it is the most favored and enriched with indulgences, and there is almost no pope since its founding who has not opened the treasures of the Church to favor it; and since example persuades better than words and favors, the Holy Fathers could not better show the esteem they held for this holy confraternity than by joining it themselves. Here is a short summary of the indulgences that the Sovereign Pontiffs have fully granted to the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, confirmed again by our Holy Father Pope Innocent XI on July 31, 1679, and received and allowed to be published by His Lordship the Archbishop of Paris on September 25 of the same year: 1. For the day of entry into the confraternity: a plenary indulgence; 2. At the point of death: a plenary indulgence; 3. For each of the three chaplets of the Rosary recited: ten years and ten quarantines of indulgences; 4. For each time they devoutly utter the holy names of Jesus and Mary: seven days of indulgences; 5. For those who devoutly take part in the procession of the holy Rosary: seven years and seven quarantines of indulgences; 6. To those who, truly penitent and having gone to confession, visit the Rosary chapel in the church where it is established, on the first Sundays of each month and on the feasts of Our Lord and of the Blessed Virgin: a plenary indulgence; 7. To those who take part in the Salve Regina: one hundred days of indulgence; 8. To those who devoutly, and to set an example, wear the holy Rosary openly: one hundred days of indulgence; 9. To sick members who cannot come to church and who, having gone to confession and received Communion, recite the holy Rosary that day, or at least the chaplet: a plenary indulgence on the day appointed for gaining it; 10. The Holy Fathers, by a great liberality toward the members of the holy Rosary, have given them the faculty of gaining the indulgences of the stations of Rome by visiting five altars and reciting before each of them five Our Fathers and five Hail Marys for the good estate of the Church. If there is only one altar, or only two, in the church where the Rosary is established, they will recite the Our Father and the Hail Mary twenty-five times before that altar.

97. This is a great favor for members of the holy Rosary confraternity, because in the churches of the stations of Rome there are plenary indulgences, releases of souls from purgatory, and several other great remissions that members can gain without trouble, expense, or leaving their own country. Even if the confraternity isn't established where the members live, they can gain those same indulgences by visiting five altars in any church, by the concession of Leo X. Here are the days on which they can gain them, determined and fixed for those outside the city of Rome by a decree of the Sacred Congregation established for indulgences, approved by our Holy Father on March 7, 1678, who ordered that it be strictly observed: All the Sundays of Advent; the three Ember Days; Christmas Eve, at the midnight, dawn, and day Masses; the feasts of Saint Stephen, Saint John the Evangelist, and the Holy Innocents, of the Circumcision and of the Epiphany; the Sundays of Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima, and from Ash Wednesday every day through Quasimodo Sunday inclusive; the three Rogation Days; Ascension Day; the vigil of Pentecost, and all the days of the octave, and the three Ember Days of September.12 Dear brother of the Rosary, there are a great many other indulgences. Si les privilèges, les grâces et les indulgences rendent une confrérie recommandable, on peut dire que celle du Rosaire est la plus recommandable de l'Église, puisqu'elle est la plus favorisée et enrichie d'indulgences, et il n'y a presque point de papes depuis son institution qui n'aient ouvert les trésors de l'Église pour la gratifier; et comme l'exemple persuade mieux que les paroles et les bienfaits, les Saints Pères n'ont pu mieux marquer l'estime qu'ils faisaient de cette sainte confrérie qu'en s'y associant eux-mêmes. Voici un petit abrégé des indulgences que les Souverains Pontifes ont entièrement accordées à la confrérie du Saint Rosaire, confirmées de nouveau par notre Saint-Père le pape Innocent XI le 31 juillet 1679, reçues et permises d'être publiées par monseigneur l'archevêque de Paris le 25 septembre de la même année: 1º Pour le jour de l'entrée dans la confrérie: indulgence plénière; 2º Pour l'article de la mort: indulgence plénière; 3º Pour chacun des trois chapelets du Rosaire récités: dix ans et dix quarantaines d'indulgences; 4º Pour chaque fois qu'ils prononceront dévotement les saints noms de Jésus et de Marie: sept jours d'indulgences; 5º Pour ceux qui assisteront dévotement à la procession du saint Rosaire: sept ans et sept quarantaines d'indulgences; 6º A ceux qui, vraiment pénitents et confessés, visiteront la chapelle du Rosaire dans l'église où elle est établie, les premiers dimanches de chaque mois et les fêtes de Notre-Seigneur et de la Sainte Vierge: indulgence plénière; 7º A ceux qui assistent au Salve Regina: cent jours d'indulgence; 8º A ceux qui dévotement et pour montrer exemple portent ouvertement le saint Rosaire: cent jours d'indulgence; 9º Aux confrères malades, qui ne pourront venir à l'église, étant confessés et communiés, réciteront le jour le saint Rosaire ou du moins le chapelet: indulgence plénière au jour marqué pour la gagner; 10º Les Saints-Pères, par une grande libéralité envers les confrères du saint Rosaire, leur ont donné la faculté de gagner les indulgences des stations de Rome, visitant cinq autels, en récitant devant chacun cinq fois le Pater et l'Ave, pour l'heureux état de l'Église. S'il n'y a qu'un autel ou deux dans cette église, où est le Rosaire établi, ils réciteront 25 fois le Pater et l'Ave devant cet autel.
97. Grande faveur pour les confrères du saint Rosaire, parce que dans les églises des stations de Rome, il y a des indulgences plénières, des délivrances d'âmes du purgatoire et plusieurs autres grandes rémissions que les confrères peuvent gagner sans peine, sans frais, sans sortir de leur pays; et même, si la confrérie n'est pas établie dans le lieu où demeurent les confrères, ils gagneront lesdites indulgences, visitant cinq autels de quelque église que ce soit, par la concession de Léon dixième. Voici les jours auxquels ils les peuvent gagner, déterminés et fixés, pour ceux qui sont hors la ville de Rome, par un décret de la Sacrée Congrégation établie pour les indulgences, approuvé par notre Saint-Père le 7 mars 1678, qui a ordonné qu'il sera inviolablement observé: Tous les dimanches de l'Avent; les trois jours des Quatre-Temps; la vigile de Noël, aux messes de minuit, de l'aurore et du jour; les fêtes de saint Étienne, de saint Jean l'Évangéliste, et des Innocents, de la Circoncision et des Rois; les dimanches de la Septuagésime, Sexagésime, Quinquagésime et, depuis le jour des Cendres, tous les jours, jusqu'au dimanche de la Quasimodo inclusivement; les trois jours des Rogations; le jour de l'Ascension; la vigile de la Pentecôte, et tous les jours de l'octave et les trois jours des Quatre-Temps de septembre.
