The Infinite Merit of Contemplation
The Rosary is presented as a uniquely meritorious devotion because it serves as a living memorial of the life and passion of Christ.
88. Saint Augustine assures us that there is no exercise more fruitful or useful for salvation than frequently reflecting on Our Lord's sufferings. Blessed Albert the Great, the teacher of Saint Thomas, learned by revelation that the mere recollection or meditation of the passion of Jesus Christ is more meritorious for a Christian than fasting on bread and water every Friday for a year, or taking the discipline until blood is drawn every week, or reciting the psalter every day.1 Ah! What, then, is the merit of the Rosary, which commemorates the entire life and passion of Our Lord? The Blessed Virgin once revealed to Blessed Alain de la Roche that after the holy sacrifice of the Mass—which is the primary and most living memorial of the passion of Jesus Christ—there is no devotion more excellent or meritorious than the Rosary, which serves as a second memorial and representation of the life and passion of Jesus Christ.
Promises of Grace and Remission
The Blessed Virgin promises special graces and the remission of sins to those who faithfully meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary.
89. The Reverend Father Dorland reports that the Blessed Virgin said one day to the venerable Dominic, a Carthusian devoted to the holy Rosary, who was living in Trier in the year 1481: "Every time a believer recites the Rosary with meditation on the mysteries of the life and passion of Jesus Christ, while in a state of grace, he obtains full and complete remission of all his sins." She also said to Blessed Alain: "Know that even though many indulgences have already been granted to my Rosary, I will add far more for each set of fifty to those who recite it without mortal sin, on their knees, devoutly; and whoever perseveres in the devotion of the holy Rosary with these articles and meditations, I will obtain for him, as a reward for this good service, full remission of the penalty and the guilt of all his sins at the end of life. Don't let this seem incredible to you; it's easy for me, since I am the Mother of the King of heaven, who calls me full of grace—and if I am filled with it, I will pour it out abundantly on my dear children."
A Penance for the Soul's Growth
Saint Dominic and other confessors are encouraged to use the Rosary as a primary penance to foster virtue and protect souls from sin.
90. Saint Dominic was so thoroughly convinced of the power and merit of the holy Rosary that he almost never gave those he confessed any other penance, as we saw in the story I told of a Roman lady to whom he gave only a single Rosary as penance. Confessors, too, if they want to walk securely in this great saint's footsteps, should assign penitents the Rosary with reflection on the sacred mysteries rather than other penances that don't have such great merit, aren't as pleasing to God, aren't as salutary for souls in advancing them in virtue, and aren't as effective at keeping them from falling into sin. What's more, by saying the Rosary one gains a great many indulgences that aren't attached to many other devotions.
The Power of Intercessory Prayer
The Rosary is affirmed as an effective means for obtaining all necessary graces for oneself and the Church.
91. "Certainly," says Abbot Blosius, "this Rosary, along with meditations on the life and Passion, is deeply pleasing to Jesus Christ and to the Blessed Virgin, and it's most effective for obtaining all things; we can say this for ourselves just as much as for those entrusted to our prayers and for the whole Church." So let us turn to the devotion of the holy Rosary in all our needs, and we will unfailingly obtain what we ask of God for our salvation."

88. Saint Augustin assure qu'il n'y a point d'exercice si fructueux et si utile au salut que de penser souvent aux souffrances de Notre-Seigneur. Le bienheureux Albert le Grand, maître de saint Thomas, a su par révélation que le simple souvenir ou la méditation de la passion de Jésus-Christ est plus méritoire au chrétien que de jeûner pendant un an tous les vendredis au pain et à l'eau, ou de prendre la discipline jusqu'au sang toutes les semaines, ou de réciter tous les jours le psautier. Ah! Quel est, par conséquent, le mérite du Rosaire, qui fait mémoire de toute la vie et la passion de Notre-Seigneur? La Sainte Vierge révéla un jour, au bienheureux Alain de la Roche, qu'après le saint sacrifice de la Messe, qui est la première et la plus vive mémoire de la passion de Jésus-Christ, il n'y avait point de dévotion plus excellente et plus méritoire que le Rosaire, qui est comme une seconde mémoire et représentation de la vie et de la passion de Jésus-Christ.
89. Le Révérend Père Dorland rapporte que la Sainte Vierge dit un jour au vénérable Dominique, chartreux, dévot du saint Rosaire, qui résidait à Trèves l'an 1481: «Toutes les fois qu'un fidèle récite le Rosaire avec les méditations des mystères de la vie et de la passion de Jésus-Christ, en état de grâce, il obtient pleine et entière rémission de tous ses péchés.» Elle dit aussi au bienheureux Alain: «Sachez qu'encore qu'il y ait quantité d'indulgences données à mon Rosaire, j'y en ajouterai beaucoup davantage pour chaque cinquantaine à ceux qui le réciteront sans péché mortel, à genoux, dévotement, et quiconque persévérera dans la dévotion du saint Rosaire avec ces articles et méditations, je lui obtiendrai, pour récompense de ce bon service, pleine rémission de la peine et de la coulpe de tous ses péchés à la fin de la vie. Et que cela ne te semble pas incroyable; il m'est facile, puisque je suis la Mère du Roi des cieux, qui m'appelle pleine de grâce, et, si j'en suis remplie, j'en ferai une ample effusion à mes chers enfants.»
90. Saint Dominique était si bien persuadé de l'efficace et mérite du saint Rosaire qu'il ne donnait quasi point d'autre pénitence à ceux qu'il confessait, comme nous avons vu dans l'histoire que j'ai rapportée d'une dame romaine à qui il ne donna pour pénitence qu'un seul Rosaire. Les confesseurs devraient aussi, pour marcher sûrement sur les traces de ce grand saint, enjoindre aux pénitents le Rosaire, avec la réflexion sur les sacrés mystères, plutôt que d'autres pénitences qui ne sont pas d'un si grand mérite, ni si agréables à Dieu, ni si salutaires aux âmes pour les faire avancer dans la vertu, ni si efficaces pour les empêcher de tomber dans le péché, et de plus, en disant le Rosaire, on gagne quantité d'indulgences qui ne sont pas attachées à plusieurs autres dévotions.
91. «Certes, dit l'abbé Blosius, ce Rosaire, avec les méditations de la vie et de la passion, est très agréable à Jésus-Christ et à la Sainte Vierge et très efficace pour obtenir toutes choses; nous le pouvons dire tant pour nous que pour ceux qui nous sont recommandés et pour toute l'Église. Recourons donc à la dévotion du saint Rosaire dans toutes nos nécessités, et nous obtiendrons infailliblement ce que nous demanderons à Dieu pour notre salut.»
