25ème Rose — Les quinze mystères du Rosaire

The Riches of the Rosary

The Rosary offers a profound and moving path to sanctification through the meditation of Christ's life and the use of sublime prayers.

Treasures of sanctification found in the prayers and meditations of the Rosary: 75. No one will ever be able to grasp the wonderful riches of sanctification held in the prayers and mysteries of the holy Rosary. For everyone who practices it, this meditation on the mysteries of the life and death of our Lord Jesus Christ is a source of the most wonderful fruits. Today, people want things that strike them, move them, and leave deep impressions on the soul. What in the world is more moving than this wonderful story of our Redeemer unfolding before our eyes in fifteen scenes, recalling the great moments of the life, death, and glory of the Savior of the world?1 What prayers are more excellent and sublime than the Lord's Prayer and the Angel's Ave?2 All our desires and all our needs are held there.

A Foundation for Contemplation

The Rosary serves as an accessible yet deep school of virtue that prepares the soul for higher contemplation.

76. Meditating on the mysteries and prayers of the Rosary is the easiest of all forms of prayer, because the variety of virtues and states of Jesus Christ that we study wonderfully refreshes and strengthens the mind and keeps distractions at bay. The learned find the deepest doctrine in these formulas, while the simple find the most familiar instruction. You must pass through this easy meditation before rising to the highest degree of contemplation. Such is the thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas, and the counsel he gives us, when he says that we must first train ourselves as on a field of battle by acquiring all the virtues of which we have the perfect model in the mysteries of the Rosary; for it is there, says the learned Cajetan, that we will gain intimate union with God, without which contemplation is only an illusion capable of seducing souls.3

The Danger of Spiritual Pride

Abandoning the foundational prayers of the Rosary under the guise of 'higher' spirituality is a dangerous illusion of pride.

77. If the false illuminés of our day, or the Quietists, had followed this advice, they wouldn't have fallen so terribly, nor caused so many scandals in devotion.4 It's a strange illusion of the devil to believe you can make more sublime prayers than the Our Father and the Hail Mary by abandoning these divine prayers, which are the support, the strength, and the guard of the soul. I admit it isn't always necessary to recite them out loud, and that interior prayer is, in a sense, more perfect than vocal prayer; but I assure you it's very dangerous—not to say pernicious—to give up, of your own initiative, the recitation of the chaplet or the Rosary under pretext of a more perfect union with God.5 The subtly proud soul, deceived by the noonday devil, does everything it can interiorly to raise itself to the sublime level of the saints' prayers, and for that reason scorns and abandons its old ways of praying—ways that are good for ordinary souls.6 On her own she shuts her ear to the prayers and greeting of an angel, and even to the prayer that a God composed, practiced, and commanded: Sic orabitis: Pater noster (Mt 6:9)—'You will pray like this'—and by that path she falls from illusion to illusion, and from precipice to precipice.7

The Ladder to Perfection

The Rosary is a secure ladder of grace that protects the soul from deception and leads it toward the fullness of Christ.

78. Believe me, my dear friend of the Rosary: if you want to reach a high level of prayer without pretense, and avoid the devil's illusions that are so common among those who pray, say your whole Rosary every day if you can, or at least the chaplet.89 If by God's grace you've already reached that point, and you want to stay there and grow in humility, keep up the practice of the holy Rosary. A soul that says its Rosary every day will never be a formal heretic or deceived by the devil; that is a claim I would sign with my blood.10 If, however, God in his great mercy draws you in the middle of your chaplet as powerfully as he has drawn some of the saints, yield to his attraction. Let God work and pray in you, let him recite the Rosary in his own way, and let that be enough for you for the day.11 But if you are only in active contemplation or ordinary prayer—of quiet, of God's presence, and of affection—you have even less reason to abandon the Rosary. Far from causing you to fall back in prayer and virtue, it will be a marvelous help to you and the true ladder of Jacob, which had fifteen rungs, by which you'll go from virtue to virtue, from light to light, and easily reach the full stature of Jesus Christ without being deceived.12

Scripture echoes

  1. Ps.84.7Those who pass through the Valley of Baca make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with blessings.
  2. Eph.4.13until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ

Notes

  1. 1"tableaux" rendered as "scenes" (also "pictures"/"panels"); the fifteen Rosary mysteries are meant as successive visual stations of Christ's life, death, and glory.
  2. 2"Oraison dominicale" = the Lord's Prayer (Our Father). "l'Ave de l'ange" = the Angel's Ave (the Angelic Salutation / Hail Mary, from the angel's greeting to Mary).
  3. 3Source has 'acquisistion' (clear typo); translated as 'acquiring' / acquisition.
  4. 4French faux illuminés names false mystics who claim special illumination; Quietists names the Quietist school de Montfort is opposing. Both terms are kept for historical specificity.
  5. 5chapelet here is the five-decade chaplet; Rosaire is the full Rosary (traditionally fifteen decades in de Montfort's usage).
  6. 6démon du midi is the traditional 'noonday devil' (daemonium meridianum), the subtle midday temptation of spiritual pride and false exaltation.
  7. 7salut d'un ange points to the angelic greeting that forms the Hail Mary; the Latin Sic orabitis: Pater noster is kept as the source's scriptural citation, with de Montfort's French gloss rendered after it.
  8. 8French affecter here means to put on, force, or pretend to advanced prayer, not to feel affection for it.
  9. 9Rosaire entier is the full Rosary (here the fifteen mysteries); chapelet is the five-decade chaplet.
  10. 10Keeps the technical sense of formal heresy (willful, known obstinacy), not mere material error.
  11. 11Source spelling puissammment treated as intended puissamment, 'powerfully'.
  12. 12Traditional spiritual taxonomy: active contemplation / ordinary prayer characterized by quietude, awareness of God's presence, and holy affection—not the highest passive mystical prayer of the previous sentence.
