23ème Rose — Les quinze mystères du Rosaire
The Joy of Meditation
The Rosary serves as a memorial of Christ's life and death, bringing joy to the heavenly court when we meditate upon his sacred wounds.
The Rosary, a Memorial of the Life and Death of Jesus 68. Jesus Christ, the divine Bridegroom of our souls, our most gentle friend, wants us to remember his gifts and value them above everything else; he has an accidental joy, as do the Blessed Virgin and all the saints in paradise, when we meditate devoutly and with affection on the sacred mysteries of the Rosary, which are the most outstanding effects of his love for us and the richest gifts he can give us, since it is through such gifts that the Blessed Virgin herself and all the saints enjoy glory.1 "Blessed Angela of Foligno once asked our Lord to teach her how she could honor him the most. He appeared to her fastened to the cross and said, "My daughter, look at my wounds." From this most loving Savior, she learned that nothing pleases him more than meditation on his sufferings. Then he showed her the wounds on his head and various details of his torments, saying, "I have suffered all this for your salvation; what can you do that equals my love for you?" (Mystical Rosebush, 4th decade, ch.2 7).
A Sacrifice of Praise
Like the holy sacrifice of the Mass, the Rosary is a powerful act of praise that honors the Trinity and shares in the fruits of the Passion.
69. The holy sacrifice of the Mass gives infinite honor to the most holy Trinity, because it represents the Passion of Jesus Christ and because in it we offer the merits of his obedience, his sufferings, and his blood. The entire heavenly court also receives an accidental glory from it, and several doctors, along with Saint Thomas, tell us that for the same reason it rejoices in the Communion of the faithful. This is because the Blessed Sacrament is a memorial of the Passion and death of Jesus Christ, and because through it, people share in its fruits and advance the work of their salvation.✦3 The holy Rosary, when prayed with meditation on the sacred mysteries, is a sacrifice of praise to God for the gift of our Redemption and a devout remembrance of the sufferings, death, and glory of Jesus Christ.✦ It is true, then, that the Rosary brings Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin, and all the blessed an accidental glory and joy; for they desire nothing more for our eternal happiness than to see us occupied with an exercise so glorious to our Savior and so saving for us.
Knowing the Savior
Meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary is essential for true repentance and for ensuring that we are recognized by Christ on the day of judgment.
70. The Gospel assures us that a sinner who converts and does penance brings joy to all the angels. If it's enough to gladden the angels that a sinner leaves his sins and does penance for them, what joy, what jubilation will it be for the whole heavenly court—what glory for Jesus Christ himself—to see us on earth meditating devoutly and with love on his humiliations, his torments, and his cruel and shameful death?4 Is there anything more effective for touching us and moving us to sincere penance? The Christian who does not meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary shows great ingratitude toward Jesus Christ and how little he values all that the divine Savior suffered for the salvation of the world. His conduct seems to say that he does not know the life of Jesus Christ, that he takes very little trouble to learn what Christ did and what he suffered to save us. This Christian should greatly fear that, not having known Jesus Christ, or having put him out of mind, Christ may reject him on the day of judgment with this reproach: "Truly I tell you, I do not know you" (Mt 25:12). So let us meditate on the life and sufferings of the Savior through the holy Rosary; let us learn to know him well and to acknowledge his benefits, so that he may recognize us as his children and his friends on the day of judgment.5

Notes
- 1 ↩"Accidental joy" (joie accidentelle) is the scholastic term for a secondary happiness added to the saints' essential beatitude, not joy that is random or trivial.

- 3 ↩"Accidental glory" (gloire accidentelle) is scholastic language for an added joy beyond the essential beatific vision, not chance or mishap.

- 5 ↩French plays on connaître / reconnaître: learn to know Christ and acknowledge his benefits so that he may recognize us. English keeps the know / acknowledge / recognize progression.
