Trusting the Father's Hand
Our suffering is transformed into consolation when we recognize it as coming from the hand of a loving Father.
God knows better than we do what is good for us, and everything He does is for our benefit. If we knew how much He loves us, we’d always be ready to receive from Him both the sweet and the bitter; everything that comes from Him would please us. The most painful afflictions only seem intolerable to us when we see them in a false light; when we see them in the hand of God, who dispenses them, and when we know that it is our Father who loves us, who humbles us and puts us in distress, our sufferings will lose their bitterness and be transformed into consolation.
Knowing and Loving God
Deepening our knowledge of God naturally increases our love for Him, enabling us to embrace both joy and suffering.
Let all our efforts be aimed at knowing God; the more we know Him, the more we'll desire to know Him. Since love is usually in proportion to knowledge, the deeper our knowledge, the greater our love will be; and if our love for God is great, we'll love Him just as much in suffering as in pleasure.
Seeking God Within
We must move beyond seeking material favors and instead encounter God through simple faith, recognizing His presence within us.
Let's not play games by seeking or loving God for the material favors He has given us or might give us. Such favors, no matter how magnificent or elevated, can never bring us as close to God as a simple act of faith. Let’s seek Him often through faith. He is within us; let’s not look for Him elsewhere. Aren't we guilty and deserving of blame if we love Him only to occupy ourselves with trivial matters that don't please Him and may even offend Him? It is to be feared that these trivial matters will cost us dearly one day.
A Heart Entirely His
We are called to surrender our whole hearts to God, removing all distractions so that He may possess us completely.
Let’s dedicate our whole heart to Him from now on. Let’s remove everything from our hearts that isn’t Him; He wants to possess them alone. Ask Him for this favor. If we do everything we can on our part, we’ll soon see the change we long for happening within us. I can’t thank Him enough for the relief He has granted you. I’m hoping for the favor of seeing Him in a few days, through His mercy. Let’s pray for one another. I am yours in the Lord, etc. .

Dieu sait mieux que nous ce qui nous est bon, et tout ce qu’Il fait est pour notre bien. Si nous savions combien Il nous aime, nous serions toujours prêts à recevoir de Lui également le doux et l’amer tout ce qui vient de Lui nous plairait. Les plus douloureuses afflictions ne nous paraissent intolérables que lorsque nous les voyons à une fausse lumière Quand nous les verrons dans la main de Dieu qui les dispense quand nous saurons que c’est notre Père qui nous aime, qui nous humilie et nous met dans la détresse, nos souffrances perdront leur amertume et se changeront en consolation.
Que tous nos efforts tendent à connaître Dieu plus nous Le connaîtrons, plus nous désirerons Le connaître. Comme l’amour est ordinairement en proportion de la connaissance, plus notre connaissance sera grande et profonde, plus grand aussi sera notre amour, et si notre amour pour Dieu est grand, nous L’aimerons également dans les peines comme dans les plaisirs.
Ne nous amusons pas à rechercher ou a aimer Dieu pour des faveurs sensibles qu’Il nous a faites ou peut nous faire. De telles faveurs, quelque magnifiques et élevées qu’elles puissent être, ne peuvent jamais nous amener aussi près de Dieu qu’un simple acte de foi. Cherchons-Le souvent par la foi. Il est au dedans de nous ; ne Le cherchons pas ailleurs. Ne serions-nous pas coupables et dignes de blâme Si nous L’aimons seulement pour nous occuper de bagatelles qui ne Lui plaisent pas et peut-être L’offensent-Il ? Il est à craindre que ces bagatelles nous coûtent cher un jour.
Consacrons-nous de tout notre coeur à Lui dès a présent. Otons de nos coeurs tout ce qui n’est pas Lui ; Il veut les posséder seul. Demandez-Lui cette faveur. Si nous faisons tout ce que nous pouvons de notre côté, nous verrons bientôt s’opérer en nous ce changement après lequel nous soupirons. Je ne puis pas assez Le remercier pour le soulagement qu’Il vous a accordé. J’attends de Sa miséricorde la faveur de Le voir dans quelques jours. Prions l’un pour l’autre. Je suis dans le Seigneur Votre, etc.
