Chapter 8SymH.1.8

VIII. Spiritus sanctus vivificans

The Life-Giving Spirit

The Holy Spirit is praised as the life-giving root of all creation who cleanses, heals, and raises all things.

Antiphon: The Holy Spirit, giving life, moving all things, and the root in every creature, washes all things from uncleanness, wiping away sins and anointing wounds, and thus is shining and a praiseworthy life, rousing and raising all things again.1

Read the original Latin

Antiphona: Spiritus sanctus vivificans vita, movens omnia, et radix est in omni creatura ac omnia de immundicia abluit tergens crimina ac ungit vulnera et sic est fulgens ac laudabilis vita suscitans et resuscitans omnia.

Scripture echoes

  1. John.6.63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no benefit. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
  2. Ps.104.30When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

Notes

  1. 1vita (line 3) is grammatically ambiguous: read as accusative internal object ('giving life [to] life') or as nominative in apposition ('the Holy Spirit, the life that gives life'). Rendered as internal object to preserve the parallel with movens omnia; the apposition reading would emphasize the Spirit as Life itself.
