Chapter 47SymH.1.47

XLVII. Nunc gaudeant (In dedicatione ecclesie)

The Church Rejoices

The motherly heart of the church rejoices as her children are gathered into her embrace in the heavenly symphony.

Antiphon: Now let the motherly heart of the Church rejoice, because in the heavenly symphony her children are gathered into her own embrace.12

The Serpent Confounded

The most foul serpent is confounded because those it held captive now shine in the blood of the Son of God.

From this, O most foul serpent, you stand confounded, because those whom your reckoning held in its grip now shine in the blood of the Son of God.34

Praise and Alleluia

Praise is offered to the most high king, sealed with an Alleluia.

And so praise be to you, O most high King. Alleluia.

Read the original Latin

Antiphona: Nunc gaudeant materna viscera ecclesie, quia in superna simphonia filii eius in sinum suum collocati sunt. Unde, o turpissime serpens, confusus es, quoniam, quos tua estimatio in visceribus suis habuit, nunc fulgent in sanguine filii dei. Et ideo laus tibi sit, rex altissime. Alleluia.

Notes

  1. 1'materna viscera' rendered 'motherly heart' to capture the maternal tenderness; 'viscera' can also mean 'inward parts' or 'bowels' in a more visceral sense.
  2. 2'in sinum suum collocati sunt' rendered 'gathered into her own embrace'; 'sinus' can mean bosom, lap, or fold.
  3. 3'tua estimatio in visceribus suis habuit' is difficult; rendered 'your reckoning held in its grip' to convey the serpent's predatory grasp.
  4. 4'turpissime' rendered 'most foul' to capture the superlative force applied to the serpent.
