Chapter 12SweHymn.1.12

Af diuupsen nödh ropar iach til tich

The Cry from the Depths

The psalmist acknowledges human inability to stand before God's judgment and pleads for mercy.

Out of deepest distress I cry to you. O God, hear my complaint; turn your merciful ears toward me, and may my voice please you. For if you intend to count every sin and look closely at what is right, who could then stand before you? So now, we have no other way to be freed from sin unless you show us grace out of your own goodwill. No one on earth can truly do what is good; everyone needs God's grace.

Anchored in the Word

The believer shifts from despair to trust, finding assurance in God's promise and the sufficiency of His grace.

I will hold fast to the sure foundation of God’s word and never put my trust in myself. I will call on God’s grace. God alone has the power to help, so I will trust in him; it will go well with me. Even if God should test me and not send help at once, my heart will still rest firmly in him through faith. He may seem stern, but he is gracious, and he helps me at the right time, just as he has promised me. Even though my sin is very great, God’s grace is greater still. He helps me if I believe it and delivers me from danger. I gladly thank him, for he has forgiven my sin. To him be praise and honor.
