Chapter 10SweHymn.1.10

Forbarma tich gud offuer mich

A Cry for Cleansing

The penitent acknowledges their inherent sinfulness and pleads for God's mercy and spiritual purification.

Have mercy on me, God, because of your great compassion and the grace within you. Take away my wrongdoing; wash away my sin and make me clean, for I know my failings well. Against you alone have I sinned, so that your words may be proved true. See, God, I was conceived in sin; in sin my mother conceived me. Yet you have loved truth and taught me your hidden wisdom. Sprinkle me with cleansing hyssop, and I will be pure, white as snow. Let me hear joy and gladness, so that the bones you have crushed may rejoice.

Renewal of the Spirit

A direct petition for a clean heart and the restoration of the Holy Spirit's presence.

Turn your face away from my sins and wipe away all my guilt. Create a clean heart in me and renew a right spirit within me. Don't cast me away from you or take your good Spirit from me. Let me know again the joy of your salvation and strengthen me with a willing spirit.

Proclaiming God's Righteousness

The redeemed soul commits to teaching others and offering the true sacrifice of a contrite heart.

I want to teach your ways to those who do wrong, so they'll turn to you and give you praise and honor. O Lord, God of my salvation, deliver me from my sins; then my tongue, at your command, will proclaim your righteousness. If you had delighted in sacrifices, I would surely have offered them to you; but the sacrifice you have taught us to bring is a sorrowful heart. Do good to Zion, my Lord, and Jerusalem, your city, will be built up by your word; there pure sacrifices will be offered to you.
