Holding Fast to the Narrow Path Without Felt Sweetness
Even when the soul feels no consolation, one must not abandon the stricter life but must weigh its fruits honestly against former ease, choosing wholeness of commitment over the comfort of a single cherished limb.
But let it be so — suppose none of this sweetness flows forth, no tenderness of tears moves you. And you must not simply return to your former way of life. No — the fruits of each life must be set side by side and weighed on the scales of conscience, tested in the balance, so that in your own judgment lesser things don't outweigh greater ones, and worse things aren't ranked above better ones as though doubtful matters were settled, or a few considerations prejudice you against many. For if you cannot do otherwise, it is surely better for you to walk strong and healthy in all other respects, even with one limb weakened — or, if necessary, amputated — than to lean all your weight on the health of that one part while every other joint has withered.
