Speculum caritatis (The Mirror of Charity)/Book 1 · Speculum caritatis — Liber I
Chapter 27SpCar.1.27

Quod charitas sit illud jugum suave, sub quo vera requies, quasi verum Sabbatum invenitur.

The Sweet Yoke and the Gift of Rest

Christ's invitation to the weary is fulfilled in the sweet yoke of charity, which brings true sabbath rest to the soul.

Let us listen, then, to the one who says, "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). 8. Him—I say—let us listen to, as he calls out, cries out, and invites those who labor to rest and to the Sabbath. "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you" (Matt. 11:28). 11. Here is refreshment, like a preparation for the Sabbath. Now let us listen to the Sabbath itself: "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Here is rest, here is peace, here is the Sabbath.

Charity as the Light Burden

The yoke of charity unites rather than oppresses, and fraternal love is the light burden that frees the soul from servile works.

And you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is sweet, and my burden is light (Matt. xi). Truly, that yoke is sweet and that burden is light; so you will find rest for your souls. That yoke doesn't press down but unites; that burden has wings, not weight.1 That yoke is charity; that burden is fraternal love.2 Here one rests, here one keeps sabbath, here one is set free from servile works.3 Finally, charity does not act wrongly, and does not think evil (1 Cor.

The Sabbath of Love and the Holy Spirit

Love of neighbor fulfills the law, covers a multitude of sins, and is poured out by the Holy Spirit, who is signified by the seventh day.

xiii); and love of neighbor does no wrong. You see, Jew, where the Sabbath is: even if a lapse into some sin does occur, it comes not from charity but from some weakness — yet because of that very weakness, a creeping theft of sin steals in — nevertheless, love covers a multitude of sins (1 Pet. iv), the Sabbath rest is not lost. And rightly is this rest dedicated to the seventh day, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us (Rom. v). Furthermore, we have already said above that the Holy Spirit is signified by the number seven.

Read the original Latin

Ecce refectio, quasi Sabbati praeparatio. Jam ipsum Sabbatum audiamus: Tollite jugum meum super vos, et discite a me, quia mitis sum et humilis corde, et invenietis requiem animabus vestris. Ecce requies, ecce tranquillitas, ecce Sabbatum.

Porro septenario numero Spiritum sanctum significari, jam superius diximus.

Notes

  1. 1The image of the burden having 'wings' (pennas habet) is a striking metaphor: love's obligation lifts rather than crushes. The contrast between wings and weight captures the paradox of charity as both duty and liberation.
  2. 2Charitas rendered as 'charity' to preserve the theological-virtue sense (love of God and neighbor as a grace-given disposition). Fraterna dilectio rendered as 'fraternal love' to distinguish the neighbor-love dimension.
  3. 3The triple 'hic' (here) builds a crescendo: rest, sabbath-keeping, and freedom from servile labor. The passive verbs (requiescitur, sabbatizatur, vacatur) convey that these are received states, not self-achieved. 'Servile works' evokes the contrast between slavish toil and the freedom of love.
