Chapter 43Revel.8.43

The Two Banners of the King

Christ instructs the king to carry the banners of mercy and justice when approaching pagans.

The Son of God speaks to His bride, saying: "A king who seeks the gain of souls and intends to go out to the pagans should carry two banners." On the first banner, let My Passion be depicted, which signifies mercy; on the second, the sword of My justice." When the king arrives among the pagans, he should first raise the banner of mercy, offering them peace. If they refuse to accept it, he should then raise the banner of justice.

Courage and Perseverance in Mission

The king is exhorted to remain steadfast in his mission, avoiding cowardice and half-hearted efforts.

Trusting in my goodness, he shouldn't fear the multitude of his enemies, nor should he retreat out of cowardice, nor listen to the voice of those saying, "Let's turn back!" Why is there any more need to struggle? If a king is too afraid to move forward, he shouldn't even attempt or begin a good work, because it's better not to take on difficult tasks than to start them and not follow through with love.

The Counsel of the Wise

The king must be accompanied by virtuous clergy to provide wisdom and spiritual guidance to the people.

The king should also take with him clergy of proven life and religious from various orders who truly despise the world. There are many among the pagans and Gentiles who promote their own sects, and one must respond to them with wisdom. The clergy should also instruct and warn the people, so they don't incur a curse through greed, or perish because of grumbling and an undisciplined life.
