Chapter 31Revel.8.31

Videbat sponsa in visione cadere solem et lunam in abyssum amisso splendore solito.

The Vision of the Falling Lights

The bride witnesses a prophetic vision of the sun and moon being overcome by darkness and a dragon, signaling a collapse of order.

As I stood in prayer, I saw in spirit the sky looking turbulent, while the sun and moon shone with brilliant clarity, their light reaching even beyond the heavens. As I watched closely, I saw good and evil angels fighting against the sun and the moon, but they didn't prevail until a great and terrible dragon rose up in the sky, to whom the sun and the moon surrendered their power and their brightness. And then, at once, the sun turned pale and black, and the moon fled beneath the earth. As I looked toward the earth, I saw it full of reptiles and serpents that were consuming the surface of the ground and killing people with their tails, until the sun fell into the abyss and the place of the moon was found no more.

The Interpretation of the Kingdom

Christ explains to the bride that the vision represents the corruption of the Swedish monarchy and the eventual judgment of those who abandoned their virtue.

Eleven years later, I heard the voice of Christ saying to me, "Remember, bride, what I showed you in Stockholm regarding the turbulent sky." Now, however, I will explain to you what those things mean. “The heaven,” he says, “that I showed you as turbulent is this kingdom of Sweden.” For this kingdom, which ought to be like a heavenly, peaceful, and just place, is now being shaken by a whirlwind of troubles and trampled down by injustices and extortions. It's no surprise. For the king and queen, who once shone like the sun and moon, have now been blackened like charcoal because they have changed their character and their will. They have also raised up men from a viperous root to strike down my friends and the simple-hearted. You should know, therefore, that the dragon himself, in his confusion, will descend more quickly than he ascended. And my friends—some of whom live like angels, while others among them live like filthy, evil angels—will be lifted up and freed from their troubles. The sun, however, will grow pale until it passes under the crown, and it will be said that its darkness has multiplied in proportion to its brightness.
