Chapter 82Revel.6.82

Christus grauiter reprehendit hic credentes spiritui phitonis predicenti futura, quia hoc operatur dyabolus ex subtilitate nature permissione Dei propter infidelitatem et cupiditatem hominum.

The Danger of Seeking Forbidden Knowledge

A soldier consults a medium, prompting a divine intervention regarding the nature of such inquiries.

A certain soldier consulted a medium to ask whether the people of the kingdom should rebel against the King of Sweden or not. It happened exactly as the medium had said. When the soldier told this story to the king in the presence of the bride of Christ, she immediately turned away from the king and heard the voice of Christ in her spirit, saying to her:

The Deception of the Enemy

Christ explains that divination occurs through divine permission due to human faithlessness and the devil's natural subtlety.

"You've heard how the soldier consulted the spirit-medium and how he predicted a future peace." So, tell the king that these things happen by my permission because of the people's lack of faith. Because of his subtle nature, the devil can know many future things, which he reveals to those who consult him in order to deceive the people who believe in him and those who are unfaithful to me. Therefore, tell the king that such people should be cut off from the company of the faithful, because they are deceivers of souls. For they give themselves to the devil and pay him homage for the sake of worldly gain, so that more people might be deceived.

The Cost of Worldly Gain

Seeking worldly gain through forbidden means leads to the loss of eternal life.

It's no wonder. For when a person desires to know more than God wants them to know, and seeks to get rich against God's will, the devil—who is testing their mind and sees it leaning toward his own suggestions—sends his helpers, namely, fortune-tellers and other enemies of the faith, so that the person might be deceived.1 And when they finally get the small, temporary thing they want, they lose what is eternal.

Propterea dic regi, vt tales homines extirpentur a consorcio fidelium, quia tales deceptores sunt animarum.

Notes

  1. 1The term 'phitones' refers to those who consult spirits or practice divination; 'fortune-tellers' is used here for modern accessibility while maintaining the sense of illicit knowledge-seeking.
