Chapter 40Revel.6.40

The Intercession for the Soul

An angel and the heavenly host present a soul before the Judge, seeking mercy through their collective intercession.

After this, in the fourth year, I saw the radiant young man again with the soul mentioned just before, who was now almost fully clothed, though not yet completely. He spoke to the Judge sitting on the throne, whom thousands upon thousands attended, and whom all adored for His patience and love: Judge, this is the soul I was praying for, and you answered that you would consider it. Now, therefore, all of us standing here ask again for your mercy on her behalf. And although we know all things in your love, we still speak in a human way for the sake of your bride, who hears and sees these things spiritually, even though human things are not like ours.

The Weight of Mercy

The Judge explains how works of charity and tears reduce the burden of judgment, granting the soul liberation.

The Judge replied: "If a cart were full of grain stalks, and many people took one stalk after another, the total number and weight would be reduced." That’s how it is now. For many tears and works of charity have come before me on behalf of this soul, and so the judgment is that she should come into your care.

The Glory of Eternal Rest

The soul is welcomed into the incomprehensible glory of God's presence, described as a place beyond all human thought.

And you, bring her to that rest which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and which the soul itself, while in the flesh, could never have imagined—a place where there is no heaven above nor earth below, where the height is beyond all thought and the length beyond all words. There, the breadth is wondrous and the depth incomprehensible; there, God is above all things, and outside and inside them; He rules all things and contains all things, yet He isn't contained by anything. After this, the soul seemed to ascend into heaven, shining as brightly as a star in its own brilliance. Then the Judge spoke, saying:

A Warning to the Living

The Judge issues a final warning regarding the pride of the deceased's descendants and the coming judgment.

The time is coming soon when I will pronounce my judgments and execute justice against the descendants of this deceased person, to whom this soul belongs. For as this generation rises up in pride, it will fall to the retribution of its pride.
