Chapter 29Revel.6.29

The Divine Invitation to the Eucharist

The Lord calls the soul to receive His Body more frequently as a response to His divine presence.

"I am your God and Lord, whose voice Moses heard in the burning bush and John heard at the Jordan." From now on, I want you to receive my Body more frequently.

The Flour of the Prophet

The Lord uses the biblical image of the widow's flour to illustrate how His Body serves as an inexhaustible food for the soul.

For this is the medicine and food by which the soul is strengthened, and the one who is weak in soul and feeble in virtues is restored to health. Isn't it written that the prophet was sent to the woman who fed him with a little flour, and it didn't run out until the rain came upon the earth? I am that prophet in a figure. My Body is that flour. This is the food of the soul; it isn't consumed or diminished, but it feeds the soul and remains forever unspent.

The Eternal Bread

The Lord contrasts physical food with the eternal nature of His Body, which was prefigured by the manna in the desert.

Physical food has three characteristics: first, it breaks down when crushed; second, it is consumed; third, it only nourishes for a time. But my food is ground yet remains whole; it isn't consumed but stays the same; and it doesn't nourish for a time, but for eternity. This food was prefigured in the manna that our ancestors ate in the desert; it is the very flesh I promised in the Gospel, which satisfies forever.

Medicine for the Soul

The Eucharist acts as a powerful medicine that strengthens the soul and is perceived by the intellect rather than the senses.

Therefore, just as a sick person grows in physical strength through bodily food, so everyone who receives this Body of mine with a good intention grows in spiritual strength. This is the most powerful medicine; it enters the soul and satisfies it. It remains hidden from the senses of the body, but is manifest to the intellect of the soul.

The Blindness of the Wicked

The Lord explains why the wicked find no sweetness in the Eucharist, as they are blinded by their own temporal desires.

This food is tasteless to the wicked, for whom nothing has flavor except the sweetness of temporal things; their eyes see nothing but their own desire, and their intellect discerns nothing but their own will.

Ego sum ille propheta in figura.

  4. John.6.51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.
