Chapter 19Revel.5.19

Reuelacio septima in libro questionum, in qua Christus loquens sponse sue beate Birgitte laudat frequentacionem confessionis, ne homo amittat graciam Dei, quam habet.

The Vent of Confession

Christ uses the metaphor of a chimney to explain how the regular practice of confession allows the smoke of sin to escape, preserving the warmth of divine grace within the soul.

The Son of God says: "When there's a fire in a house, there must be an opening for the smoke to escape, so that the person living there can enjoy the warmth." So, if you want to keep my spirit and my divine grace, it’s helpful to practice constant confession, so that the smoke of sin can escape. Although my divine spirit is in itself unchanging, it withdraws more quickly from any heart that isn't guarded by the confession of humility.
