Declarat Sponsus sponse, quid significat distancia duorum pedum et extraccio gladii, de quibus dixerat supra in proximo capitulo .
The Two Feet of Judgment
The Lord explains that the distance between Him and His enemies is measured by the exhaustion of their earthly rewards and the completion of their malice.
The Son says, "I told you before that there is only a distance of two feet between my enemies and me." For even now, they are approaching judgment with the other foot. One of these feet is the reward for those good works they did for my sake. Therefore, from this day on, their infamy will grow, their pleasure will turn bitter, their joy will be taken away, and their tribulation and pain will increase. The second foot is their malice, which isn't yet complete. But as the saying goes, when something is full, it bursts; so when the soul and body are separated, they are condemned by the Judge.
The Drawn Sword of Sin
The drawn sword represents the hardening of the will to sin as worldly prosperity fades, leading to an urgent warning of impending destruction.
The sword is the will to sin, which has been drawn halfway, because as honor fades and setbacks follow, they become more distressed and burn all the more for sin. For prosperity and honor did not let them think much about sin. Now, however, they want to live longer to satisfy their own desires, and they're already setting themselves up to sin more freely. Woe to them, because unless they amend their lives, their destruction is already drawing near.
