The Fourfold Path of Humility
Christ instructs his bride to practice humility through four specific relationships with the world, sinners, the holy, and the poor.
The Son speaks to his bride: "You must humble yourself in four ways." First, before the powerful of this world, because since man refused to obey God, it's fitting that he should obey man; and because man cannot stand without leaders, you must therefore defer to authority.1 Second, humble yourself before the spiritually poor—that is, before sinners—by praying for them and thanking God that you haven't been, and aren't, like them. Third, before the spiritually wealthy—that is, before the friends of God—by considering yourself unworthy to serve them and to live among them. Fourth, before the poor of the world, by helping them, clothing them, and washing their feet."
Notes
- 1 ↩The Latin 'deferendum est potestati' implies both a duty to respect and a duty to submit to those in power.
