The Mother's Infinite Mercy
The Mother expresses her readiness to embrace any sinner who turns to her Son with a sincere heart.
The Mother says, "There's a proverb among you: 'With such a thing,' she says, 'you can lead me out of my homeland.'" So now I say: There is no sinner in the world, no matter how great or terrible, who says in his heart that my Son—the Creator and Redeemer of all—is his closest friend and most intimate companion, Why wouldn't I be ready to come to him immediately, like a mother of love to her son, embracing him and saying, 'What is it, my son, that you want?' Even if someone had earned the deepest punishment of hell, if they still had the will to care nothing for the honors of the world, nor for its greed and the pleasures of the flesh that the Church detests, and if they desired nothing but their own basic sustenance, then that person and I would immediately be in perfect harmony.
The Reward of Pure Praise
God promises spiritual rewards for those who offer praise and song with a heart detached from worldly vanity.
Tell that person who writes songs and praises for me—not for their own praise or reward, but for the praise of the One who is worthy of all praise for all his works—that just as the princes of this world give worldly rewards to those who praise them, so I will reward them in a spiritual way. Just as a single syllable carries many musical notes, so it pleases God to give a crown in heaven for every syllable in the song. And it will be said of him: 'Look, here comes the one who praises, who composed this song not for any worldly reward, but solely for the sake of God.'
The Mystery of the Trinity
Through a vision of the Trinity, God reveals His unity and invites the soul into deeper contemplation.
While being tempted regarding the Holy Trinity, he was caught up in an ecstasy and saw what appeared to be three faces of women. The first said, "I've attended many weddings, but I've never seen a three-in-one." The second replied, "If there are three and one, it must be that one is before, another is after, or two are in one." And the third added, "They couldn't make themselves; who, then, made them?" Then the Holy Spirit said openly: "We will come to him and make our home with him." And waking up, he was freed from the temptation. After this, Christ said to Lady Birgitta, "I am three and one." "I want to show you what the power of the Father is, what the wisdom of the Son is, and what the virtue of the Holy Spirit is, so that it may be known that I am God, three and one: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." And this revelation is complete where it speaks of the pulpit.
The Value of Suffering
Christ explains that illness and suffering can be paths to greater intimacy with Him, while affirming the value of disciplined health.
Christ also said, "Tell her that she will earn more with me through illness than through health." Lazarus became more radiant through his suffering, and Job more beloved through his patience; yet my chosen ones who enjoy health don't displease me, because their hearts are always with me, and their bodies are kept in disciplined abstinence and holy labor."1
Notes
- 1 ↩The term 'discreta' here refers to the virtue of discretion, implying a balanced, measured, or prudent approach to asceticism.
