Revelationes (Heavenly Revelations)/Book 4 · Liber IV (partial)
Chapter 110Revel.4.110

The Marks of the Two Spirits

Christ distinguishes between the warmth of the Holy Spirit and the deceptive coldness and pride of the evil spirit.

The Son speaks: "How can I understand my spirit, since there are two—the good spirit and the evil one?" I will tell you: my spirit is warm and produces two good things. First, it makes you desire nothing but God; second, it gives you profound humility and a contempt for the world. The evil spirit, however, is both cold and hot: cold, because it makes everything that belongs to God taste bitter; it's hot, because it inclines a person toward the pleasures of the flesh and the pride of the world, and stirs up a desire for one's own praise.

Responding to the Deceiver

The soul is instructed to recognize the devil's smooth disguises and firmly reject his presence.

He comes, in fact, acting smooth like a friend, but he's like a biting dog. He also comes as a sweet comforter, but he's a most wicked ensnarer. Therefore, when he comes, say to him: 'I don't want you, because your end is evil.'

Welcoming the Divine Fire

The soul is taught a prayer of humble invitation to the Holy Spirit, acknowledging its total dependence on God.

When the good spirit comes, say to him: 'Come, Lord, like fire, and set my heart ablaze!' Even though I’m unworthy to have you, I still need you, because you won’t be any better because of me, nor do you need anything of mine; but I will be better because of you, and without you, I am nothing.
