Verba Christi ad sponsam, qualiter eius spiritus cum iniquis esse non potest, et de separacione malorum a bonis et de missione bonorum, spiritualibus armis armatorum, in bellum, idest contra mundum.

The Incompatibility of Light and Darkness

Christ declares the impossibility of his spirit dwelling with those who are filled with worldly attachments and devoid of his love.

My enemies are like the most ferocious beasts; they can never be satisfied, nor can they find rest. Their hearts are so empty of my love that the thought of my passion never enters them. Not once has this word come from the depths of their hearts: 'Lord, you have redeemed us; praise be to you for your bitter passion!' How can my spirit be with those who have no divine love for me, and who willingly betray others just to get their own way? Their hearts are full of the vilest worms—that is, their attachments to the world. The devil has put his own filth into their mouths, which is why my words don't please them. That is why I will separate them from my friends with my blade. And just as there is no death more bitter than the death of the blade, so there is no punishment they won't share in; they will be cut in two by the devil and separated from me. They are so hateful to me that even everyone who clings to them will be separated from me.

Soldiers of the Spirit

Christ commissions his faithful followers as soldiers, arming them with the virtues of faith, charity, and patience to engage in spiritual battle.

That is why I send my friends to separate the devils from my members, because they are truly my enemies. I send them, therefore, like soldiers into battle. For anyone who disciplines their own flesh and keeps themselves from what is forbidden is truly my soldier. They will have my words, which I spoke with my own mouth, as a spear; they will have faith as a sword in their hand; and the breastplate of charity will be on their chest, so that whatever happens, they will love me no less.1 They must carry the shield of patience at their side, so that they can endure all things patiently. For I have kept them like gold in a vessel, and now they must go out and walk in my way.

The Path of Suffering and Glory

Christ encourages his followers to embrace tribulation by reminding them that he suffered first and that he remains present to protect them through every trial.

I could not enter into the glory of My majesty according to the established justice without tribulation in My humanity. How, then, will they enter? If their Lord suffered, it's no wonder if they suffer too. If the Lord endured blows, it's no great thing if they endure words. Let them not be afraid, because I never abandon them. Just as it is impossible for the devil to touch and divide the heart of God, so it is impossible for the devil to separate them from Me. Because they are like the purest gold in my sight, even if they are tested by a little fire, I don't abandon them; instead, it's for their greater reward.

"Inimici mei sunt quasi bestie ferocissime: numquam saciari possunt nec requiescere. Horum cor sic est vacuum a caritate mea, quod numquam in eo intrat cogitacio passionis mee. Numquam semel adhuc processit de intimo corde eorum hoc verbum: 'Domine, redemisti nos, laus sit tibi pro amara passione tua!' Quomodo spiritus meus potest esse cum eis, qui nullam diuinam caritatem habent ad me, qui, ut voluntatem suam perficiant, libenter produnt alios?

Ipsorum cor plenum est vermibus vilissimis, idest affeccionibus mundi. In ore eorum posuit diabolus stercus suum, et ideo non placent eis verba mea. Ideo ego separabo eos ab amicis meis cum seca mea. Et sicut non est mors ulla morte sece amarior, sic non est supplicium, quo non participes fiant, et secabuntur per medium a diabolo et diuidentur a me. Sic sunt odiosi michi, quod eciam omnes, qui adherent eis, separabuntur a me.

Ideo mitto amicos meos, ut diuidant diabolos a membris meis, quia ipsi vere sunt inimici mei. Mitto ergo eos quasi milites in bellum. Omnis enim, qui affligit carnem suam et abstinet se ab illicitis, vere miles meus est.

Ipsi habebunt pro lancea verba mea, que ore meo locutus sum, in manu gladium, idest fidem, in pectore eorum erit lorica caritatis, ut, quidquid acciderit, non minus diligant me. Clipeum paciencie debent habere ad latus, ut omnia pacienter sustineant. Ego enim inclusi eos quasi aurum in vase, et nunc exire debent et incedere viam meam.

Ego non poteram ingredi secundum iusticiam ordinatam in gloriam maiestatis absque tribulacione cum humanitate mea. Quomodo ergo ipsi intrabunt? Si Dominus eorum paciebatur, non mirum, si et ipsi paciantur. Si Dominus sustinuit verbera, non magnum, si ipsi sustinebunt verba. Non timeant, quia ego numquam relinquo eos. Sicut impossibile est diabolo cor Dei tangere et diuidere, sic impossibile est diabolo separare eos a me.

Et quia ipsi sunt quasi aurum purissimum in conspectu meo, ideo, si modico igne probentur, non tamen relinquo eos, sed est ad eorum maiorem remuneracionem."
