The Incarnation of Love
Mary describes the unique, love-filled conception of her Son, who dwelt within her as her own heart.
Mary said, "Consider, daughter, the passion of my Son!" His members were to me like my own members, and like my own heart. For He was in me just as other children are accustomed to be in the womb of their mother. But He was conceived out of the fervent charity of divine love, whereas others are conceived out of the lust of the flesh. That’s why his cousin John says so well: 'The Word became flesh.'✦ For it was through love that he came, and he was within me. The Word and love together made him within me. He was, in fact, like my own heart to me.
The Shared Heart of the Passion
Mary recounts the profound unity of suffering she experienced with her Son during his passion and crucifixion.
Therefore, when he was born from me, I felt as if half of my heart were being born and leaving me. And when he suffered, I felt as if my own heart were suffering. Just as something half outside and half inside feels the pain equally on the inside when the outside part is pierced, so it was for me: when my Son was scourged and pierced, it was as if my own heart were being scourged and pierced. I was also closer to him in his passion, and I was not separated from him. I stood closer to his cross, and just as a wound hurts more the closer it is to the heart, so his pain was more severe to me than to anyone else. And when he looked at me from the cross and I looked at him, tears flowed from my eyes as if from veins. And when he saw me so worn down by grief, he was so embittered by my pain that all the agony of his own wounds seemed to him as if lulled to sleep by the pain of mine, which he saw in me.
Redemption and Renunciation
Mary concludes by contrasting the fall of Adam and Eve with the redemption wrought by her and her Son, urging the daughter to renounce the world.
Therefore, I say it boldly: his pain was my pain, because his heart was my heart. For just as Adam and Eve sold the world for a single piece of fruit, so my Son and I redeemed the world as if with one heart. Therefore, my daughter, reflect on what I was like at the death of my Son, and it won't be hard for you to leave the world behind.
