Preces Quotidianae
Cry for Deliverance and Confession
The soul cries out for deliverance from its own evils and for grace to confess hidden sins.
Deliver me, Lord, from my own evils; deliver my soul from the lower hell.1 Deep calls to deep, that he may snatch me from the abyss. But there are other things too that I feel less—no less heavy, perhaps heavier—and about these I ask to be enlightened, so that I may confess them.2
Petition Against Temptation
The prayer asks to be spared from temptation, acknowledging human frailty.
6.3 And do not lead me into temptation; do not allow me to be led; do not let me enter into temptation—mindful and merciful toward my frailty and my weakness, so often put to the test.4
Deliverance from All Evil
The prayer implores deliverance from all forms of evil, both temporal and eternal.
7.5 But deliver me from evil: from the evil in myself and in the flesh, and from its sudden assault; from the evil Demon and his suggestion; from the penal evils I have most justly and most deservedly earned; from the evils of the age to come—spare me there; burn here, cut here, Lord.67 From the evils of the present age; spare me here too.8
Litany of Specific Evils
The prayer enumerates the specific evils of the world, illness, and temporal cares, and cries out for deliverance from them all.
the malice of this world, and of the accidents that befall in it; the malice of this disease with which I struggle;9 the malice of the business in which I am entangled; past, present, and future evils,10 From all of these, deliver me, Lord.
Read the original Latin
Libera me, Domine, a meis, Libera animam meam ab inferno inferiori. Abyssus abyssum invocat, Ut de abysso eripiat. Sed et alia, quz minus sentio, Non minus gravia, fortasse graviora, De quibus peto illuminari, ut possim confiteri. 6. Et ne inducas, ne me induci sinas, ne me sinas intrare in tentationem, Memor et misertus fragilitatis, et infirmitatis me:xe toties explorat:e. 7. Sed libera me a malo, Malo in meipso et carne, et surreptione ejus; Malo Daemone et suggestione ejus; Malis peenalibus, quae justissime dignissimeque commeritus sum ; Malis seculi futuri ; ibi parce, hie ure, hic seca, Domine. Malis szeculi przesentis ; parce et hic.
Malitia mundi hujus, et accidentium in eo; Malitia morbi hujus, quicum conflictor ;. Malitia negotii, cui implicor ; Malis preteritis, presentibus, et futuris,
Ab his omnibus libera me, Domine.
Notes
- 1 ↩Latin a meis is elliptical (literally 'from my own'); rendered as 'from my own evils' to complete the sense in a deliverance petition.
- 2 ↩Normalized quz as quae ('which'); almost certainly a typographic/OCR corruption.
- 3 ↩Source is only the section numeral '6.'; no continuous Latin prose to translate.
- 4 ↩Corrupt endings me:xe and explorat:e read as meae toties exploratae ('of my ... so often tested').
- 5 ↩Source is only the section numeral '7.'; no continuous Latin prose to translate.
- 6 ↩peenalibus read as poenalibus ('penal'); hie read as hic ('here'), parallel to the following hic seca.
- 7 ↩surreptione rendered as 'sudden assault' (stealthy seizure/surprise of the flesh), not mere 'suggestion'.
- 8 ↩szeculi przesentis read as saeculi praesentis ('of the present age/world').
- 9 ↩accidentium can mean chance events/misfortunes or (more philosophically) incidental properties; rendered as real-world happenings that befall, fitting the deliverance litany.
- 10 ↩negotii may mean a particular affair/task or broader daily business; 'business' keeps the concrete entanglement sense of implicor.
