Preces Quotidianae

Acclamations of Praise

A series of biblical acclamations including peace on earth, glory to God, and hosanna.

Peace on earth, good will among people.✦ Glory, blessing, might, power, honor, thanksgiving, riches, holiness, and praise, wisdom, strength, salvation1 to our God who lives forever, who sits on the Throne, and to the Lamb who was slain.2 Amen. Alleluia. Hosanna in the highest, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.✦

Confession of Praise

A confession of unworthiness and thanksgiving for God's creation and ordering of one's life.

Confession of Praise. Lord, I am a sinner who does not repent, and I am so utterly unworthy; it would be more fitting for me to lie prostrate before You and, with tears and groans, beg pardon for my sins than to praise You with a defiled mouth.✦3 Yet, trusting in Your innate goodness, blessed are You, God, who created me and brought me into this life and fashioned me so that I should be a living soul, and not some unfeeling thing. a human being, not a brute beast; a civilized person, not a barbarian; free, not a house-born slave,4 Legitimate, not illegitimate,

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩Luke.2.14 — Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.
  2. ↩Ps.118.26;Matt.21.9;Mark.11.9;Luke.13.35;John.12.13 — Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD; and we bless you from the house of the LORD. Matt.21.9 — The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed were shouting, saying, 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!' Mark.11.9 — And those who went ahead and those who followed were crying out, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!" Luke.13.35 — 'Look, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will certainly not see me until the time comes when you say, "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord."' 'Certainly not' better carries the emphatic negation. John.12.13 — They took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and they were shouting, 'Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!'
  3. ↩Isa.6.5 — And I said, 'Woe is me, for I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.'

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source reads Divitiz; translated as Divitiae (riches), the expected form in this doxological list.
  2. 2 ↩Normalized reading takes im szcula as in saecula (forever / for the ages); the printed form looks like an OCR/type corruption.
  3. 3 ↩Source opens with Peecantem; translated as Peccantem (sinning), the only plausible reading.
  4. 4 ↩Verna is a house-born slave (born into the household), not a slave in general; rendered accordingly rather than with generic 'slave'.
