Preces Quotidianae

Prayer for Peace and Truth

The prayer opens by addressing God as the God of truth and Prince of peace, citing Deuteronomy and Isaiah, and petitions for peace and truth in our days.

O God of truth, and also Prince of peace (Deuteronomy✦✦ 32 4 Isaiah 91 May there be peace and truth in our days (Isaiah✦2 39 8

Unity of the Believers

The prayer continues with a plea for the multitude of believers to have one heart and one soul, alluding to Acts 4:32.

Let there be one heart and one soul. for the multitude of those who believe.✦ «46εἰ.✦3 4. 52.4

Mercy for the Weak and Restoration

The prayer acknowledges God's gentle care for the bruised and smoldering, citing Isaiah 42:8, as a prelude to petitions for mercy and restoration.

O You who do not break the bruised reed, and do not quench the smoldering wick,5 xlii. 8.

Petition for Strengthening and Mercy

The prayer asks God to strengthen those who stand firm, restore those slipping into heresy or sin, and to avert wrath from the city and house through merciful justice.

Strengthen all who stand firm in the truth and in grace; restore all who are slipping into heresies or sins.6 I beg You, Lord, by all Your mercy, that Your wrath be taken away from this city, from this house, because we have sinned against You; that You strengthen this place, together with the whole region, by tempering justice with mercy.7

Intercession for Love and the Kingdom

The prayer concludes by asking God to grant mutual love, to lead the faithful into His heavenly Kingdom, and to be filled with glory.

Grant me to love in return those who love me, even if they are unknown to me; and lead them into Your heavenly Kingdom, just as You lead me also; and grant me to show them the mercy of God in my prayers. that with those for whom I have prayed, or am bound to pray in any way whatever, and with all the people of God, I may be granted to be brought into Your Kingdom, there to appear in righteousness, to be filled with glory there

Da redamare mei amantes, etsi mihi ignotos, Et perdue eos in Regnum Tuum coeleste, sicut et me, Et da mihi ostendere illis misericordiam Dei, in precibus meis. Ut cum his pro quibus oravi, vel qualicunque modo orare teneor, et cum omni populo Dei, introduci mihi detur in Regnum Tuum, ibi apparere in justitia,

ibi satiari gloria.

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩Deut.32.4 — The Rock — his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, righteous and upright is he.
  2. ↩Isa.9.6 — For the increase of his government and for peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.
  3. ↩Isa.39.8 — Hezekiah said to Isaiah, "The word of the LORD which you have spoken is good." And he said, "There will be peace and faithfulness in my days."
  4. ↩Acts.4.32 — Now the great number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and not one of them claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but everything they had was held in common.
  5. ↩Acts.4.32 — Now the great number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and not one of them claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but everything they had was held in common.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source reads '3x.'; most plausible intended reading is 'ix.' (Isaiah 9), matching Princeps pacis / Isa 9:6. Rendered as 9.
  2. 2 ↩Normalized source begins with editorial debris '- 61]' and ends with '4s.'; debris dropped. Terminal '4s.' taken as the start of the following Isaiah citation (Is.), continued in s7–s8.
  3. 3 ↩Source reading «46εἰ. looks corrupt (likely a garbled book/citation label before iv. 32/52, perhaps Act./Acts). Left as printed; not silently emended.
  4. 4 ↩Printed verse '52' may be a misreading of '32' if the intended allusion is Acts 4:32 (multitudini/multitudinis credentium); source surface retained.
  5. 5 ↩Reading confrmgis as confringis; trailing Zs. treated as corrupted citation debris (likely Is.), not as part of the prayer wording.
  6. 6 ↩Reading hwreses as haereses (heresies).
  7. 7 ↩Reading hace as hac and hune as hunc.
