The Many Ways of Grace
God works as Creator and Redeemer through illumination, infusion, reproof, endurance, help, solemn protest, and consolation.
as Creator, as Redeemer—yet working effectively and openly.1 By the illumination of knowledge and the infusion of grace, by reproof,2 Through endurance, through help, through solemn protest, and through consolation.3
Gifts and Thanksgiving
The Spirit gives gifts, and the fitting response is unceasing thanksgiving for the Son's redemptive work from conception to second coming.
Gifts of this Spirit.4 The fruit due to Your Word and only Son is to give thanks with unceasing remembrance: to Him as the cleanser of our nature in the Conception and the Nativity; as the liberator of persons in His sufferings, the Cross, and death; as the conqueror of hell in the Descent, and of death in the Resurrection; as our forerunner in the Ascension; as our advocate in the Session; and as the restorer of our faith at the Second Coming.56
Read the original Latin
qua Creator, qua Redemptor, Sed efficaciter et manifeste operantem. Illuminatione scientie et Infusione gratie Reprehensione,
Tolerantia, Subventione, Contestatione, Consolatione. Charismata ; o l hujus Spiritus. Fructus Verbo Tuo et: Filio unico indesinente memoria gratias agere, Ut mundatori naturz nostrz, in Conceptione et Nativitate; Liberatori personarum, in Passionibus, Cruce, Morte; Triumphatori de inferno, in Descensu, de morte, in Resurrectione ; Preeursori nostro, in Ascensione; Advocato nostro, in Sessione; Instauratori fidei nostre, in Adventu secundo.
Notes
- 1 ↩Sed is taken as adversative contrast with the titles: not Creator/Redeemer in name only, but actually at work. Continues the accusative Dominum nostrum... operantem from the previous section.
- 2 ↩Reprehensione rendered as 'reproof' (correction/rebuke); list continues in the next section with patience, help, exhortation, and consolation.
- 3 ↩Continues the ablative catalogue from the previous section (modes of the Spirit’s working). Contestatione can mean solemn protest, remonstrance, or calling to witness; rendered here as ‘solemn protest’ to match reprehension/consolation in the series.
- 4 ↩Source reading ‘o l hujus Spiritus’ is corrupt/uncertain (likely OCR damage). Translated as ‘of this Spirit,’ taking Charismata hujus Spiritus as the intended core; ‘o l’ left unresolved.
- 5 ↩Normalized clear OCR/typographic damage for sense: naturz/nostrz → naturae/nostrae; nostre → nostrae; Preeursori → Praecursori. ‘et:’ treated as ‘et’ introducing Filio unico.
- 6 ↩Sessione rendered ‘Session’ (Christ seated at the Father’s right hand). Instauratori as ‘restorer’ (also ‘establisher/renewer’) of our faith at the Second Advent.
