Preces Quotidianae

Daily Blessing and Praise

The chapter opens with a vow to bless and praise God daily, forever and ever.

I will bless You every day,✦ and I will praise Your name forever and ever. Versicle.1 2.

God the Creator of All Things

A series of scriptural allusions proclaim God as the one who calls creation into being, upholds all things, and provides for all creatures.

You who called things that were not as though they were.✦ Rom.✦2 4.✦ 17.✦3 By whom all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and things invisible—Col.✦4 1. 16. You who uphold all things by the word of Your power, Heb.✦5 1. 3.✦ You who do not leave Yourself without a witness, doing good from heaven, giving rains and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and joy,✦6 14.✦ 17. That by Your ordinance all things continue even to this day, because all things serve You. Psalm7 119. 91.

The Creation and Dignity of Humanity

The focus shifts to the formation of humanity, being made in God's image, given angelic protection, dominion, and placed in Paradise.

Who Yourself, after prior deliberation, formed man with Your hands from the clay of the earth, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, Gen.8 2. 7. And You honored him with Your image, Gen.✦ 1. 26. And You commanded Your angels concerning him, Ps.✦ 91. 11.9 And you set him over the works of your hands, Ps.✦10 8. 6.✦ And You placed him in the Paradise of delight, Gen.✦ ii. 15.

Mercy and the Promise of Redemption

Despite humanity's fall, God did not despise them but opened the door to repentance and gave the precious promise of a saving seed.

And yet You did not despise the one who despised Your commandments, But you opened the door of repentance and life to him, cf. xi. 18. Giving him the greatest and most precious promise regarding the saving seed: 2 Pet.✦✦11 1.✦ 4.✦ Gen. iii.✦12 15.✦

God's Varied Instruction of Humanity

The chapter concludes by listing the diverse ways God has taught humanity: through natural revelation, the law, sacrifices, prophets, and psalms.

You who instructed our race, Through what is known of God, Through the work of the law written in our hearts, Through the worship of the Sacrifices, Through the words of the prophets, Through the melody of the Psalms,

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Reading 's:xculum' as 'saeculum' (and 'seculum seculi' as the matching 'saeculum saeculi')—the standard psalmic formula in saeculum et in saeculum saeculi, 'forever and ever.' Source orthography looks corrupt/OCR-damaged.
  2. 2 ↩Source reading Aom. is almost certainly a corrupt/OCR form of Rom. (Romans), matching the Romans 4:17 wording in s1 and the citation pattern of the next section (Col.).
  3. 3 ↩Source reading l7. is treated as verse 17 (likely OCR/type confusion of 1/l); fits Romans 4:17 with the Latin of s1.
  4. 4 ↩Source opens with Greek Α; read as Latin A (A quo, 'by/from whom'), matching the relative-clause prayer series and Colossians 1:16.
  5. 5 ↩Source is corrupt/OCR-damaged: 'Tux' read as 'Tuae' (Your); '/Jeb' read as 'Heb.' (Hebrews). 'portas' kept as 2nd-person prayer address ('You who uphold'), fitting the surrounding Preces Privatae vocative style and the adapted Heb 1:3 wording (Vulgate: portans… verbo virtutis suae).
  6. 6 ↩Reading colo as caelo ('from heaven') and letitia as laetitia ('joy'); trailing '4cf.' treated as a citation cue (cf.), not prose.
  7. 7 ↩Source reading hune is treated as hunc (this day); likely a scribal/print error.
  8. 8 ↩prehabita deliberatione = praehabita deliberatione (ablative absolute): after prior counsel/deliberation, often read as echoing the divine counsel of Gen 1:26 before the forming of man in Gen 2:7.
  9. 9 ↩Source reads '1l.'; most plausible intended verse number is '11' (Ps 91:11 / Vulg. 90:11), given the Latin clause and neighboring citation pattern (Gen. i. 26; Ps. viii. 6).
  10. 10 ↩Source reads 'P5.'; neighboring citation pattern (Psa/. …; Gen. …) makes Psalm abbreviation 'Ps.' the intended reading.
  11. 11 ↩Source reads 'ilii'; translated as 'illi' ('to him'), matching the preceding section and ordinary Latin morphology.
  12. 12 ↩Source reads 'm.'; rendered as 'iii.' (Genesis chapter 3), the reading that fits 'salutari semine' and the following verse number 15.
