Preces Quotidianae
Grace for the Journey
The petitioner asks for grace to serve God with reverence, to not receive it in vain, to not neglect it, but to rekindle, grow, remain, and have it completed.
May I find grace before you, so that I may have grace through which, as I serve, I may please you with fear and reverence.✦ Heb.✦1 12. 28.✦ And may I also find another grace—that grace—so that I may not receive it in vain. 2 Cor.✦2 6. 1.✦ May I not fail it.3 Heb.✦4 12. 15.✦ Indeed - so that I may not neglect it - 1 Tim.✦5 4. 14.✦ so far that I would then fall away from it.6 But rather, to rekindle it - 2 Tim.✦7 1.✦ 6.✦8 so that I may grow in it. Indeed, so that I may therefore remain in it, right up to the end of my life.9 And oh! complete for me what is lacking, 1 Thess.✦10 iii.✦11 10.✦
Faith, Hope, and Love
The prayer asks for increase of faith, strengthening of hope, kindling of charity, and pouring of God's love into the heart, so that love may be extended to both friend and enemy.
Of your gifts: Faith—increase my little faith. Of Hope—strengthen my trembling hope. Of Charity—kindle its smoldering wick.✦12 Pour your love into my heart. (Rom.)✦13 v. 5. so that, as you do, I may love a friend in you and an enemy for your sake. You who give grace to the humble. (Jas.)14
Humility and Holy Fear
The petitioner seeks grace for humility and rejoices in the fear of the Lord, who never abandons those who fear Him.
4. 6.✦ And give me grace as well, by which I may be humble.✦ You who never abandon those who fear you,✦ May my heart rejoice, so that it may fear you,

Notes
- 1 ↩Source reads 'eb.'; treated as the truncated biblical book label 'Heb.' (Hebrews), completing the citation Heb. 12:28 with the following numeral fragments.
- 2 ↩Source ends '32 Cor.'; treated as '2 Cor.' (2 Corinthians), with vi. 1. following as 6:1, the classic 'do not receive grace in vain' text.
- 3 ↩Ei is feminine dative, almost certainly referring to gratiam (grace) just named: may I not be wanting toward that grace / fail to live up to it.
- 4 ↩Source reads only “e .”; in context it is almost certainly the truncated book label for Hebrews, introducing the citation completed in s2–s3 as Heb. 12:15.
- 5 ↩Source “neglipam” read as negligam (“I may neglect”); “1 T7Zm.” read as the book label 1 Tim., completed by s5–s6 as 1 Tim. 4:14.
- 6 ↩Continues the negative purpose of s4 (ne…): not neglecting grace so badly that one drops away from it. “excidam ab ea” = fall away / drop out from that grace.
- 7 ↩Source “2 7m.” read as the book label 2 Tim.; the verse is completed in the next section as 2 Tim. 1:6 (Vulgate resuscitare gratiam). Infinitive resuscitare rendered as the desired action in the prayer chain: rekindle / stir up that grace.
- 8 ↩Normalized reading takes '0.' as OCR corruption of '6.', yielding 2 Tim. 1:6 with the preceding citation.
- 9 ↩Reading 'vitz: mee' as 'vitae meae' (end of my life); colon is treated as OCR noise.
- 10 ↩Reading 'quz' as 'quae'. The trailing '1 7658' is treated as a garbled book abbreviation, most plausibly '1 Thess.' before the following chapter and verse fragments.
- 11 ↩If the allusion is 1 Thess. 3:10, source 'ii.' is likely OCR for 'iii.'; corrected under that reading and flagged for review.
- 12 ↩ejus taken as charity itself: kindle charity’s smoldering wick (the speaker’s weak love).
- 13 ↩Normalized Charnitatem as Charitatem (charity/love); Rom. read as a Romans citation tag, likely pointing to Rom 5:5.
- 14 ↩Jac. taken as James citation tag (cf. Jas 4:6 / related humble-grace tradition); verse not supplied in source.
