A Litany of Deliverance
The soul cries out for deliverance from every kind of temporal affliction and, above all, from the two great deaths: a shameful sudden death and the eternal death of the soul.
From a life that is no true life—in sorrow, sickness, disgrace, want, dangers, bondage, and unrest. From death in sin, in shame, with torment, in madness, in baseness, by violence, by betrayal,1 from a sudden death, from eternal death.2
Read the original Latin
À vita non vitali in moerore, invaletudine, infamia, inopia, periculis, servitute, inquietudine. A morte in peccato, probro, cum cruciatu, in vecordia, turpitudine, per vim, ex proditione,
improvisa, ΑΔ morte { zeterna.
Notes
- 1 ↩vecordia can mean madness, folly, or senseless cowardice; rendered here as 'madness' in the death-litany series.
- 2 ↩Source reading is corrupt/garbled: «improvisa, ΑΔ morte { zeterna.» Taken, with the preceding deliverance-litany (A morte… ex proditione,), as continuing/parallel petitions: (morte) improvisa and a morte aeterna. «zeterna» read as aeterna; «ΑΔ»/«{» treated as noise or mangled a/ab.
