The Dual Path of Practice and Knowledge

Evagrius defines the distinct goals of ascetic practice and spiritual knowledge, identifying the specific demonic forces that hinder each.

The goal of ascetic practice is love, while the goal of spiritual knowledge is theology; the starting points of both are faith and the contemplation of nature. Those demons that seize upon the soul’s capacity for passion are said to oppose ascetic practice, while those that trouble its faculty of reason are called enemies of all truth and opponents of contemplation.
