The struggle against demonic influence is more manageable within a community than in isolation.
The demons wrestle openly with hermits themselves, but against those practicing virtue in monasteries or communities they arm the more careless brothers. Yet this second battle is much easier than the first, because nowhere on earth can you find people more vicious than demons or capable of taking on all their malice at once.

Τοῖς μὲν ἀναχωρηταῖς οἱ δαίμονες γυμνοὶ προσπαλαίουσι, τοῖς δὲ ἐν κοινοβίοις ἢ συνοδίαις κατεργαζομένοις τὴν ἀρετὴν τοὺς ἀμελεστέρους τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἐφοπλίζουσι· πολλῷ δὲ κουφότερος ὁ δεύτερος πόλεμος τοῦ πρώτου διότι οὐκ ἔστιν εὑρεῖν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀνθρώπους πικροτέρους δαιμόνων ἢ πᾶσαν ἀθρόως αὐτῶν ὑποδεχομένους τὴν κακουργίαν.
