The Assault of the Noonday Demon
The demon of acedia uses restlessness, resentment, and false rationalizations to tempt the monk to abandon his vocation.
The demon of acedia, also called the noonday demon, is the most oppressive of all the demons. It attacks the monk around the fourth hour and besieges his soul until the eighth. First, it makes the sun seem to move slowly or stand still, as if the day were fifty hours long. Then it compels him to keep looking toward the windows and rushing out of his cell, to stare at the sun to see how far it is from the ninth hour, and to look around in every direction to see if any of the brothers are coming. It also fills him with hatred for the place, for his very way of life, and for the work of his hands. It tells him that love has disappeared from among the brothers and that there is no one to encourage him. And if someone has upset the monk during those days, the demon uses that too to intensify his hatred. It also makes him long for other places, where the necessities of life are easier to find and he can take up work that is less demanding and more successful. Then it adds that pleasing the Lord does not depend on any particular place, since, it claims, the divine can be worshiped everywhere. Along with all this, it brings back memories of his family and his former life. It pictures a long future ahead of him and sets the hardships of ascetic practice before his eyes. In short, it tries every possible scheme to make the monk leave his cell and abandon his course.
The Peace After the Struggle
Victory over the temptation of acedia is rewarded with a profound sense of peace and inexpressible joy.
No other demon immediately follows this one. Instead, once the struggle is over, a state of peace and an inexpressible joy take its place in the soul.✦

Ὁ τῆς ἀκηδίας δαίμων, ὃς καὶ μεσημβρινὸς καλεῖται, πάντων τῶν δαιμόνων ἐστὶ βαρύτατος· καὶ ἐφίσταται μὲν τῷ μοναχῷ περὶ ὥραν τετάρτην, κυκλοῖ δὲ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ μέχρις ὥρας ὀγδόης. Καὶ πρῶτον μὲν τὸν ἥλιον καθορᾶσθαι ποιεῖ δυσκίνητον ἢ ἀκίνητον, πεντηκοντάωρον τὴν ἡμέραν δεικνύς.
