The Third Beatitude
This section introduces the third beatitude, 'Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth,' quoting Matthew 5:5.
Question 34. What is the third beatitude? Answer. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matt. 5:5).
The Meaning of Meekness
This beatitude teaches meekness and humility towards God, the Church, and superiors, and refrains from harming or judging others, seeing oneself as least worthy.
Question 35. What does this beatitude teach? Answer. This beatitude teaches us, first, to show meekness and humility, or obedience, before God, before Christ's Church, and before those in authority over us, with eagerness and diligence, without any delay, imitating our Lord Jesus Christ, who was meek. When we show obedience to those in authority over us, we must consider that we are showing it to Christ Himself; likewise, the honor and respect we give to our priests should be directed to Christ Himself. Second, this beatitude teaches that blessed are those people who do not harm anyone, do not take away anyone's honor, do not offend or slander anyone; rather, they consider themselves the most contemptible people, constantly accusing their own lives and recognizing their good deeds as insignificant, unworthy, even meaningless. But those who have the duty to instruct others, if from an abundance of heart they speak an offensive word to a sinner, not out of malice or humiliation, but for the spiritual edification of their neighbor; such persons not only do not exclude themselves from this beatitude, but also fulfill their duty, according to the teaching of the Apostle: “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual should set them right in a spirit of gentleness; each one should watch himself, so that you may not also be tempted” (Gal. 6:1). If anyone says that it's impossible for a person to refrain from anger, let them know that they should direct their anger and indignation not at their neighbor, but at the devil, who moves and inclines the human will toward all evil. Those who have acquired this virtue will inherit the promised land.
The Reward of Meekness
Those who practice meekness will inherit the promised land, enjoying God's blessings in this life and eternal joy in the next, as Psalm 27:13 suggests.
They enjoy the abundance of God's blessings in this life, and in the future they hope to abound in eternal joy and the Lord's goodness, according to Scripture: “I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (Ps. 26:13).
