The Fifth Article of Faith

This section introduces the fifth article of the faith, which concerns Christ's resurrection on the third day according to the Scriptures.

Question 52.1 What is the fifth article of the faith?

Christ's Resurrection: Divine Power and Bodily Reality

The chapter explains that Christ's resurrection was an act of His divine power, occurring in the same body in which He lived and died, as foretold in Scripture.

Answer. “And rose again on the third day, just as the Scriptures foretold.” Question 53. What does this article of the faith teach? Answer. Two truths. First, that our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power of His Divinity, rose from the dead, as it is written of Him in the Prophets and in the Psalms (Lk.✦ 24:7).✦ Second, that He rose in the same body in which He was born and died.

Scriptural Basis for Christ's Suffering and Resurrection

This part explores how both the Old and New Testaments foretold and confirmed Christ's suffering, death, and resurrection, emphasizing the necessity and fulfillment of these events according to Scripture.

Question 54. According to which Scriptures was it necessary for Christ to suffer, die, and on the third day rise?✦✦ Answer. Holy Scripture is of two kinds: one from the Old Testament, the other from the New. The first foretold that Christ would come and how He would save the human race: namely, that He would suffer, die, and rise from the dead. According to this Scripture, it was necessary for Christ to fulfill all this. The Scripture of the New Testament, however, reveals that He fulfilled all of that and came exactly as it had been written about Him; for He Himself says of Himself: “The Son of Man goes as it is written of Him” (Mk.✦ 14:21).✦ Also, after His resurrection from the dead, He said on the way to two of His disciples: “Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into His glory? And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them from all the Scriptures the things concerning Him” (Lk.✦ 24:26–27).✦

The Sure Word of Prophecy and Apostolic Witness

The chapter concludes by affirming the reliability of prophetic Scripture, the apostolic confirmation of Christ's resurrection, and the typological significance of Jonah's experience as a sign of Christ's burial and resurrection.

The Apostle confirms that the Old Testament Scripture also carries weight and authority for us, saying, “We have the prophetic word made more certain, and you do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19).✦ 1:19).✦ And that everything was fulfilled exactly according to this Scripture, all the Evangelists confirm for us. And the Apostle says: “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Eleven; afterward He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, of whom the greater number remain until now, though some have fallen asleep; afterward He appeared to James, then to all the Apostles; last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared also to me” (1 Cor.✦23 15:3–8).✦ Likewise the Prophet Jonah prefigured Christ’s Resurrection, a figure which our Lord Jesus Christ Himself applies to Himself. He says to the Jews: “An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the Prophet: for as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights” (Matt.✦ 12:39–40).✦
