О Символе веры
The Twelve Articles of Faith
The Catholic and Orthodox faith is summarized in twelve articles, as established by the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople, which clearly set forth all that is necessary for belief.
Question 5. How many articles of the Catholic and Orthodox faith are there? Answer. There are twelve articles of the Catholic and Orthodox Faith, according to the Creed of the First Council of Nicaea and the Second Council of Constantinople.1 In them, everything that belongs to our faith is set forth so clearly that we must believe neither more, nor less, nor in any other way than according to the understanding of those Fathers. Still, some of these articles are clear and easy to understand on their own; others contain something hidden, and by these, the rest must also be understood.2

Notes
- 1 ↩Russian «по символу Первого Никейского и Второго Константинопольского Соборов» names the Creed by the Orthodox numbering of the ecumenical councils: Nicaea I (325) and Constantinople I (381), the second ecumenical council. In ordinary English, “the Second Council of Constantinople” usually means Constantinople II (553). The intended referent is the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, not the council of 553.
- 2 ↩«по которым» is dative plural, so it refers to those other articles (not to «нечто сокровенное», which is singular). «и прочее» is left as “the rest”: the remaining articles, or remaining matters of the faith to be read through them.
